I'm fairly certain that the ect sensor has to be replaced ??? Did you test ? If your not 100% sure from testing , your best bet would be to take it to a qualified repair shop . Do you like buying parts without knowing that's the problem for sure ? Making part stores rich .

SOURCE: cooling fans wont come on

I think you may have a PCM problem, the fact the fans come on in "failure mode" when the ECT signal is lost indicates the circuits to the fans are ok. Technicians disconnect the ECT to verify fan operation as a quick test for checking the fan circuit and the fan motors. one last note, you do realize the fans don't come on until either the AC is on or the engine reaches approx 235 Degrees F. at idle that takes a long time.

no just lower the level or be quick about plugging in the new sensor, that is what I do, u may lose a cup of coolant but much less hassle than draining the radiator.

Location of engine coolant temperature sensor

Automobiles: 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 4-cylinder 2.0L MFI DOHC

NOTE
The "left" side of the engine is the driver's side.

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor (a device which changes resistance or voltage as temperature changes). The sensor detects the temperature of engine coolant and provides a corresponding signal to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module - aka "the car's computer").

The ECT sensor is mounted in the following locations (small Ford engines):

1.8L engines: in the cylinder head
1.9L engines: threaded into the heater hose inlet pipe
2.0L engines: at the left rear of the engine

2.0L Zetec Engine

(1) Partially drain the engine cooling system using a clean container. If coolant is in good condition, retain for reuse.
(2) Disconnect the battery ground cable.
(3) Disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.
(4) Remove the retaining clip and the ECT sensor.

Fig. 1 Escort ZX2 ECT sensor - The retaining clip is removed (at the solid arrow). Withdraw ECT sensor by gently wiggling/pulling in the direction of the dashed arrow.

To install:

NOTE
Coat the ECT sensor O-ring with clean coolant prior to installation.

(1) Replace the retaining clip and the ECT sensor.
(2) Connect the electrical wiring connector from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
(3) Connect the battery ground cable.
(4) Refill the engine cooling system. An inexpensive plastic "Radiator Funnel" will help with this task.

Where is the coolant temperature sensor on a 1999 honda crv?

Good Day
the ECT sensor is located on the cyl head near the coolant outlet, so if you are looking at the eng from the front of the car stand in the middle you will see the rad put your left hand on the rad then with your hand on the rad(left side) move your hand towards the back of the eng approx 6" the ECT will be around that area:
if you are replacing the ECT after putting the new ECT in warm the eng until the coolant fan turns on and off twice.
I hope this helps

Cheers
