1997 Saturn SL1 will not start or even roll over. The battery is good but nothing happens when ignition turns. I got to playing with it, placed my foot on the brake and made sure the car was in park and after jiggling it for quite some time, the car engine turned over and cranked. I suspect that the BTSI solenoid is bad. I removed the center console and the BTSI. The long rod end seems to slide in and out with no resistance. I have had trouble finding another BTSI solenoid. Any ideas?

The park neutral safety switch is bad ! Put the vehicle in neutral an see if it starts then .
BTSI solenoid ???? What do you think this is ? I do believe you have this mixed up , it's really called shift interlock solenoid > a safety system that will not let the vehicle shift from park unless the driver is pushing the brake pedal .

The neutral safety switch is located in the shifter housing.

Here is a link to a good article on this topic, that would beat an explanation from me.

Yes, it sounds like the NSS is the culprit.

Sounds like the safety switch that keeps you from starting the car when it's not in park is loose or is not making good electrical contact.

1997 SL1 Saturn will not turn. lights air signals work. car will not start.starter was checked it was good, the battery was checked it was good as well.

Check the continuity of your power cables leading from the battery to the starter as well as the lines from the ignition switch. You could have a faulty connection or a bad switch.

Key is stuck in ignition of 1997 saturn sl1, will not turn.

I saw a similar post with similar problem with another Saturn. The dealer told him it was a bad battery. My guess here is it is a bad Ignition. However, just to appease the dealer side, disconnect the negative cable from the battery and connect the jumper cable to the negative cable and positive cable. If it was the battery causing the problem the key should come right out. My guess is you need to replace the ignition as one or more of the tumblers is not releasing as it should.

Voltage drop testing the starter electrical circuit would be a good first step , ruling out the cable's connections an ground !
Starter Voltage Drop If this doesn't find a problem ,then check the control side . Ignition switch , when it won't start check for Battery voltage at the connection at the starter solenoid "S" terminal .

SL1 won't start, just single click, electronics work

Try charging the battery or jumping the car, your alternator could be shot and not charging the battery.

98 saturn sl1 won't start

if you have good battery voltage at this time, and when you banged on the starter and then the car cranked over, it would appear you have a defective starter. i would imagine if you replaced it in july of last year that it could still be under some sort of warranty, so i would look into that. either way, it sounds as if you need a new starter.
