Loud & piercing whinning engine noise

The car is a 1997 Saab 900 convertable with a 2.3 engine. I noticed my power windows stopped working properly yesterday and then my horn stopped completely. After my 10 minute drive home from work I noticed a loud & piercing noise from the engine compartment, but seemingly not from the engine itself. My guess is that is it the alternator bearing or belt tensioner bearing, but I don't know for sure. Need help please.

Very nice. Problem solved. Thank you.

maltmt2 - Just had the car repaired. The problem was actually the ignition switch getting stuck in the on position and not belt related. Apparently the location of the SAAB ignition switch is ripe for debris and fluid to drop into and junk things up. There you have it. Thanks for the help.

Your right on. Its most likely the altenator. Chances are the belt is sliping because the pully bearing is bad. Of course this all means that you are running off the battery and it is getting low. You will get stuck when you can least afford to. You must remove the altenator and replace. Oh one last thing it could very well be your water pump pully bearing. So remove fan belt and spin with your hand, if you feel resistance thats it, so remove fan belt and check before you start replacing components. Good luck

WHIN NOISE

Are you sure it is not the transmission pump or torque converter

No one can guess at noises-need to have the vehicle to check
that out

Have a dealer weigh in- IF- it is still in warranty

When you say loud & the vehicle is only 3 to 4 years old
I would stop using it in a hurry until that issue is solved

I was rolling down a window when all of a sudden the follow 4 things STOPPED WORKING and haven't worked since: - All power windows - Heater blower - Horn - Wipers All of the relays I've found seem in tact...

Is the car a convertible? If so the window controls operate through the convertible top computer.
By ignition switch module are you talking about the part under the lock cylinder? They do fail a lot.
What do you mean by the relays are intact? Have you checked for power at each fuse with the key on?

Top, Heater, Windows not working

Did you ever fix this problem or find a solution? I have the SAME issue in a non-convertible (heater, windows - and horn & wipers).

Please email me if you found a solution! josh at boostvt dot c0m

Electric windows stopped oporating

Windows on your car are controlled by the convertible top computer. You will have to have someone check the car with the factory tool. The computer is in the trunk on the left side.

Windows will not stay up, they need reseting ?

Sounds like you may have broken so-called window glide rollers (aka window regulator bushings) which are the green plastic and metal clips that secure the window glass to the scissors lifts. Each window has two.
