I used a 3/8 in to 1/2 in socket adapter to get mine off. Make sure you take the top one off first, then get the bottom one off. To make sure you can refill it instead of just emptying it.

The only place to put gear oil is in the "pumpkin". Otherwise called the rear-end. To do so, I recommend driving the car backwards onto two ramps to raise the rear end up in the air, this also tilts the car forward. Between the rear wheels, in the center of the axle, is a large metal container of gears and gear oil. There should be a large hex-headed bolt less than half-way from the bottom to the top on the rear, facing your back bumper. This is where the gear oil goes in, but after you take the bolt out, before you add any oil, stick your finger into the hole and try to feel the oil level. If you can feel it, you don't need any more gear oil to be added.
Sound like your rear end needs gear oil. If you look at the backside of your rear end about halfway up there will be a bolt that should be 9/16 in size, you take that bolt off and you stick you finger in there to see if theres fluid. If you don't feel fluid then you will need to ad some. When you go to get your gear oil there is a pump like thing they have at the auto part store that will thread on to the gear oil contiainer and it has a hose on it, you stick the hose in the bolt hole and pump the fluid in until it starts to come back out. hopefully this fixes your problem and it definately sounds like thats your problem
Caution!!! Removing the driveshaft yoke retaining nut could cause misalignment of the ring and pinion gears and lead to more serious problems. If you are wanting to access the pinion bearing because your 8.8 rear end has started making noise then you really need to disassemble the unit as a whole. A job left in most cases to an expert.
Depends on the make year and model, Engine size and transmission type and if it's 4wheel drive or not. Gear oil can possiblt go in the front rear end the rear rear end, The transfer case, The manual transmission. Some units don't use gear oil. Some manual steering gear boxes use gear oil too. Most all gears boxes don't have a way to pour the oil in as they have level plugs in the side at the normal fluid level. These plugs are located on the sides and they frequently can be turned with a 3/8 in drive ratchet extension. If the oil comes out or is just inside the hole with the vehical parked leavel then it's full. Yes they also have drain plugs and they frequently have the same kind and size of plug on the bottom as on the side.
The recomended gear oil is 75w90 synthetic. However the capacities
increase with the size of the rear end.

You dont have to pull the whole rear end out. remove rear wheel and remove the brake drums. theres 4 nuts on the back side of the brake backing plate which holds the axles in. once you get the 4 nuts loose you can pull the axle out (might need some force to pull out). You should be able to take the differential cover out to inspect the gears.
