Tried switching from 4WD to 2 WD, it went into neutral. Mechanic said it is not the motor . I have a 1998 Ford Expedition with 215K miles.

Mechanic said it was probably a fuse or sensor but he doesn't do electrical.

Does the vehicle move when the car is in 2wd and in gear as all cars are permanently in 2 wd. The 4wd bit only comes into play when the transfer case is activated (servo/lever or vacuum actuator) and that brings in the front wheels . There is a condition called torque wind up when the vehicle is driven on hard surface and when you were luck enough for the 4wd to disengage it may have jumped the selector back to neutral from the pressure release on the gears . Come back with more details and find an accredited mechanic as he obviously has limited experience.

With any 4WD like this, always move a few feet in the opposite direction when disengaging. If you were moving fwd in 4wd, switch to 2wd, back up a few feet, then go fwd.

THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR IS NOT WORKING TO INGAGE 4 WHEEL DRIVE. CHECK WITH DOOR OPEN WHEN YOU PUSH 4 WHEEL SWITCH YOU SHOULD HEAR MOTOR INGAGE 4 WHEEL DRIVE. IF YOU HEAR MOTOR BUT STILL NO 4 WHEEL DRIVE THE GEAR ON MOTOR COULD BE DAMAGED. REPLACE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR.

4 wheel drive lights flashing while I'm driving 97 ford ranger

There's a good chance the electric shift motor is bad. Can you tell if you're in 2-WD or 4-WD? Making a slow, sharp turn will feel different - difficult, clunky - in 4WD.

It's possible to get a manual conversion kit, but that won't solve the light issue, which wouldn't matter at that point, anyway. It could also simply be a wiring problem, with current not getting from Point A to Point B. Checking the OBD II will probably give you several codes, which might help.

I had the electric switching on my Expedition, and it went bad. Not cheap to repair.

I purchased new tires. Now the 4wd is stuck. Its hard to make sharp turns. What is the solution to fix this please?

Leighjean,If it is stuck in 4-wheel drive, you have to do this.#1 With engine running, shift to neutral.#2 Switch the dash conrtol to A4D (or 2WD).#3 Push on the brake pedal.(This is important) You shuold be ready to go in A4D or 2 WD.

I was in 4WD H, came to a stop for about 5 minutes in a parking lot. When I proceeded, I heard a loud "clunk" - thought I hit something. but I did not. My truck went into 4WD L all by itself. I pulled over...

unhook the battery for about 5 mins. this will reset the powertrain control module (PCM) that would be a good start, is this a king ranch? or just a basic f-150?

1998 ford expedition 4x4 not working transfercase works

Today I fixed the vacuum lines to the front differential (nee transaxle). I had trouble finding parts in the local auto store that would do the trick - but I got something cobbled together. Based on my experience, I can go back to the store and get the right parts for a proper fit.

As of now, 4WD will engage but will not disengage - clearly one of the connections is still poor, or I accidentally switched the ports, or the vacuum shift motor (attached to the front differential) is shot (obviously from abuse).

As near as I can tell, once I switch into 4WD-HI, it will not shut off. 4WD-LO will engage and disengage properly. If I turn the car off for a while, a couple of times 4WD has disengaged. Hmmm...
