Driver side lock key just turns around - 2001 Volkswagen Golf

The body control module is responsible for controlling various electrical functions in a vehicle, including door locks. Removing the 50-amp fuse could have caused the module to reset, which may have resulted in the driver side door becoming locked.
To resolve the issue, try the following steps:

1. Turn the vehicle off and remove the key from the ignition.
2. Close all doors, including the driver side door.
3. Lock the vehicle using the key or remote.
4. Wait for a few seconds, then unlock the vehicle using the key or remote.
5. Check if the driver side door is unlocked. If not, try using the key or remote to lock and unlock the door again.

If the above steps do not work, there may be a problem with the body control module or the door lock actuator. In this case, it is recommended to consult a certified mechanic for further assistance.

1.   Close and lock all doors with the driver’s side power lock/unlock switch.

2.   Insert key into ignition and remove it from the ignition key cylinder at least six times within 10 seconds. Your Hazard Lamps will flash if you have performed this step successfully. NOTE: Withdraw key completely from ignition cylinder each time. If this procedure is performed too fast, system will not enter programming mode.

3.   Insert key into the ignition cylinder and turn to the ACC position.

4.   Within 5 seconds, push ANY button on the remote transmitter. Your Hazard Lamps should flash. NOTE: Do not press the button more than one time in the above step. If the button is pressed more than one time, the programming procedure will not be successful.

5.   If there are any remaining transmitters (including the old ones), unlock then lock all doors using the driver’s side power lock/unlock switch and within 5 seconds, push ANY button on the next remote. Your Hazard Lamps should flash. Repeat this step for each transmitter (including any existing transmitters).

6.   Turn the key to the OFF position, remove keys from the ignition, unlock doors using the driver’s side power lock/unlock switch and open the driver side door.

sounds like the ignition lock is worn out.

1) Key turns but dose not unlock door. This means that the rod that goes to the back of the lock has came off. This also means that is the reason door is not unlocking with the remote as it pops the lock rod inside the door which pushes the lock open.
2) Key does not turn lock at all but works passengers side door. This means that the locks has been changed in the door, but that doesn't sound like the problem as you say the remote doesn't open the drivers side door so more than likely the rod has came off the back of the lock

Remove plastic cover around steering column, where lock cylinder fit in, around that housing, around the lower side if it, will be a small pin hole, must turn key to on, and with a pick hook, push up on pin in little hole, lock cylinder will slide right out, if you don't have key, you will have to knock a screw driver with a hammer where the key goes in so you can turn it, will be hard to turn but must turn it, lock is no good anyway, to pull lock out.

turn to ACC remove trims around key assembly should find a small hole in the side of the lock assembly stick small screw driver in hole should pop out or use top of old antenna mast in hole

Replacing the lock is not all that difficult. Door panel needs to come off to get in there. You likely can get another lock and key from any scrapyard fairly cheap.(around $10) I suggest you either change passenger side lock to the drivers side so your key will work there and also the ignition, or getting a pair of locks so you can open both doors with the same key. (just easier that way)

This means your door lock cylinder needs to be replaced. It is a 1 hour job and the cylinder costs around $180. Thanks

according to my partsman (who has had great advice for many years), you do not have to remove the door panel to replace the door handle which contains the cylinder lock. the handle is released with a screw which you can see when you open the door. you will need a starhead screwdriver or socket. A new handle costs around $40 at a parts store in my area. call around for a locksmith who will re-key your key to the new lock or use the key which comes with the new lock, your choice. i am in dealing with this also

First off you will need your key to the lock and a 1/8" flat blade screw driver.  Notice that your lock only turns 1/4 rotation, after doing this procedure you will be able to turn the lock an extra 1/4 turn counter clock-wise (when viewed from the front of the latch).

Turn the lock so it is vertical (perpendicular to the latch itself (counter clock-wise)).  Turn the latch around so you can view the back and the lock is to your left.  Above the lock there is a slot that you can put your screw driver into (not the indention in the metal).  You need to insert your screw driver and listen very closely, you should hear your screw driver hitting the metal latch.  Once you push the latch down with your screw driver, turn the lock another 1/4 turn with your key from the front (counter clock-wise looking from the front).

Once the lock has been turn a full 1/2 turn, you should be able to push the lock out from the back of the latch.

To put the lock in the new latch, you have to have your key in the lock.  Put the lock in the latch with the one pesky keep latch facing the handle used to open the glove compartment.  Once the lock is in the new latch, turn clock-wise until you can't anymore (1/2 turn).
