auto trans no less.. it shifts no you.
so what trans is there?
so reverse works, 1 gear, then 2nd , but not 3rd.
some have a TCM that does the auto shifts.
and must be scanned to see why it wont shift.
levels ok, that be like first first. done not like engine, ever.
do it correctly.
The TCM may have flash codes, the FSM factory serv. man. covers this, as does mitchells.but it will ask you
what engine you have, and which trans is car 4wd?
first know your drive train then ask.
I assume this is an automatic?
If the shift linkage is not damaged (jammed or disconnected the usual answer is the governer valve in the transmission is sticking.
The fix for this normally involves pulling the trans out stripping it apart cleaning the governer valve new seals gaskets and reassembling.
(translated lots of money) try using a auto trans flush to clean all the gunk out of the transmission. Run the trans through all the gears with the trans flush and try driving it (only short distance test drive as its not proper trans fluid) see if you can get it out of first gear (flatten the gas pedal and let the engine go to max revs on short bursts) once it shifts once or twice go back and remove the trans flush fluid and replace with correct specification auto trans fluid I would also change the transmission filter at this point if it was mine .
Shift module internal to trans is not functioning properly. Take it to a good independent trans repair shop. Usually, for any internal, the labor is so high, esp for a 4wd, that you replace it with an entire reman trans. with a warranty.
Sounds as though the valve body in the trans is stuck.I would use a additive called LUBE GUARD .You can find this at NAPA auto parts. If it doesn`t work, the trans will need to be repaired by a trans man.The additive will un~ stick the valve body, and treat the metal in he trans. It would be a good idea to change the trans fluid, and filter. And add the additive then.I hope this helps,it will work in about 5 miles or so if the additive is going to fix it.If this is at all helpful, please let us know.thank you.
Had the transmission serviced in a while? would be a good idea to have someone look at it for you. I wouldn't continue to drive it until you do a diagnostic and have it properly serviced. Transmissions on that truck could cost you upwards of $7,500. and I think you would prefer spending the $ 350. it would cost for a servicing.
I have a jeep wrangler and to have it towed you are suppose to put the transverecase in neutral after you first depress brake pedal put trans in neutral then start engine shift auto trans into drive release brake pedal make sure there is no movement, shut engine off with key left in acc position shift auto trans into park, disconnect neg battery cable (damage can result in trans if shifted into park while transvere case is in neutral with engine running) you should refere to your owners manuel
