Every time I drive my 2006 ford escape 4wd, one: the steering wheel when you turn it left or right it click really hard it kind of looks like drunk driver is driving because you can't keep straight because its hard to steer with out making click two: when its wet or snowing the 4wd engages but nothing happens and it feels like one wheel is actually spinning because it goes to the right when it grabs traction.

Hi Dan
You did not indicate whether you checked the fluid level for your power steering. Please check this first. Please read your owners manual for specific instructions!
You may be low on fluid.
The next step would be to check your engine belt. The power steering pump is driven by a belt. It is possible that you have a loose or worn belt that is not able to turn the pump sufficiently at idle, but when you rev the engine higher, the pump produces sufficient power. One way to test this is to rev the engine, then try to turn the wheel, see if you notice any difference. Let me know.

There is a recall on a steering problem for this year,I own the same year and remeber getting something about this in the mail. Call your dealership and it should be free to fix.
SOURCE: 4 WD clunking and clicking sound when turning left or right
Sounds like the front drive axles are worn.My 89 MPV had the same "clicling" noise with an occasional clunk. The reason you feel it more in 4wd mode is because power is now being transfered thru the worn axles. I replaced both sides for approx $375(Axles rebuilt were 130 for drivers side and 110 for passenger side the rest was labor)

the return line on the power steering pump maybe bad are plug and it may also be low on power steering and the drive belt if the car has over 40,000 miles on it then its time to change the drive belt as well Merry Christmas & Happy New Year as always wish you the best of luck Michigan Man
