Brake switch fuse keeps blowing

ABS warning light comes on, can't shift out of park, no brake lights
I changed the fuse, 15 amp, it worked OK once, next time I tried to drive it, fuse was blown again

any suggestions? anything else I can check?

thanks!

thanks for the quick reply. I am a complete novice at car repair, I know where the master cylinder is and what it looks like but where is the brake pressure switch in relation to the master cylinder? and how difficult is it to remove and replace?

Replace your brake pressure switch on the master cylinder and that should take care of your problem.

  • edward80 Jun 04, 2009

it is going to right under the resevoir . should have a colored band going around it with a white connector. unplug it and i believe it is a 14 mm wrench....just take it out and screw the new one in.

Check you truck on Ford's site to see if you have this recall scheduled ( or completed ).
You are looking for :
recall 05S28. Description: Speed Control Deactivation Switch.

Next, do you have an aftermarket 3rd brake lamp / CHMSL ( Center High Mount Stop Lamp ) ? This could be on a Cap, or something like a line of fire.
If so, disconnect them, and try the fuse replacement again.

If you turn the key to the accessory position, put your foot on the brake, and remove the truck from park to neutral, and start the truck, does the fuse still blow ? ( your MY the shift interlock is the same circuit as the brake lamps ).

I have a 2000 Mercedes E430 base sedan. Last week I replaced the brake light switch because it was out and it solved the problem to the point that I can now put my car into gear and drive it, however, as...

Brake light switch problem may cause the ESP / BAS lights to illuminate.

Common symptoms of a bad
Mercedes brake light switch.
  • Car stuck in Park.
  • ABS ESP ETS lights come on.
  • Can not move the shifter from Park to Drive.
  • Brakes Defective Warning on Instrument Cluster
  • Car won't shift gears. Stuck in 2nd gear, limp mode.
  • Brake lights don't work. (Brake light switch can still be defective even if the brake lights work. Checking the brake light operation is not a good test.)
  • ESP, BAS, ABS lights turn on. Car won't shift properly. Stuck in gear.

TEST: To test your new brake light switch: Turn you car off to reset the ABS light. apply the parking brake. and start the car in neutral or park without using the brake. if the problem is the brake light switch... the light will only come on when you press the brake pedal.

If you replaced the brake light switch and the light is still on you should check a few other things such as:

  • Fuses and Relays
  • ABS pump
  • ABS wheel speed sensor
  • Brake Fluid Level
  • Get an advanced scanner to read trouble codes.

NOTE: ** You may need a MBZ scan tool to reset the error code which was stored in the ECU because of the bad brake light switch.

Blowing brake light fuse

you might want in this case try a higher rating fuse, example is if the fuse is 15 amp rase it to a 25 amp fuse, try not to go over 40 amp if possible,if that still blows it is more than likley a shorted switch or a bad relay causing the overload or short. after the fuse change an still a problem chech the relay for the break lights next, these are located in the engine compartment and on some models in the trunk, good luck,Gary

Will not come out of Park, and the ABS light is flashing.

check to see if you have brake lights, if not you will need a brake light switch. if the brake light switch goes bad it will not let the shift interlock selenoid to release.

2003 Mountaineeer wont shift into Park

There is a shift interlock mechanism that only alows the key to come out in park. It is the same mechanism that will not let you put it into gear unless you put your foot on the brake. You cannot safely bypass it.

ABS light, gear won't change

Sounds like he may have blown the brake light fuse while messing with the bulb. Make sure the correct bulb is installed. It should be a double filament bulb not a single. The wrong bulb will blow the fuse.
The shift lock solenoid uses the brake light switch to unlock.
The ABS code will be for the brake light system and will clear itself when the power is restored to the brake light switch.
