There are a number of things that could be the issue. There are three things that make the engine run: air, fuel, and spark. Anything preventing these things from properly performing will cause that problem. Without seeing or hearing the car, I would first check fuel pressure, voltage to the fuel pump under load (throttle) or a possible fouled out fuel filter. If those are fine, I would be looking at spark plugs, proper gaping of the plugs and such. Good luck.

You will need to check the fuel pressure. You will have a connection on the fuel line to the motor under the hood. No fuel pressure indicates one of three problems. Fuse in fuse box, relay in relay box under the hood or fuel pump located in fuel tank.

It could be the mass air flow sensor. Its mounted to the side of the air cleaner. Just unplug the electrical connection to bypass the unit. If this is the problem the vehicle should run smoothly.

After running out of gas, the system is still full of air/vapor. In the fuel injection system, the pump will run momentarily each time the ignition is turned on. You should be able to hear the pump. Each time the pump runs it purges some of the air through the return line back to the tank. Try turning the ignition on and off about 10 - 20 times to purge the air and vapor and fill the system back full of gas.

I would check to be on the safe side the fuel filter is going in the right direction. The arrow is pointing towards the engine away from the fuel tank, Then you need to make sure the fuel pump wiring connections are good contact and did not come loose when driving.
