You cannot wire through the jbl amps you need to go to the amp and can only wire in the speakers
SOURCE: Installing an aftermarket stereo in 1996 explorer...sound issues.
You may have a factory amplifier in the rear of the explorer in the right cargo panel. You need to supply power to it by connecting the amp power on (Blue/White I think) in the dash to a power source (such as red on your stereo harness) so it comes on with the key. If you do have the amplifier, that's why you have no sound.

The stereo in Ford products comes out with a special tool, Which you can find at a place that sells car radios. Remember that Ford used a Premium JBL/Philco stereo in your car at the factory.
Connecting subwoofers and power amps means going to the main fuse box under the hood rather than the smaller one in the cabin. You may actually wind up running a power feed directly from the battery. I would then buy one of the harness adapters from a stereo shop to match the new radio and equipment into my system. They come with instructions so that you so not have to butcher your wiring harness to install a new radio and speakers.
Comment: Over the years, I have seen some very nice cars depreciated in value when the owners cut into the harnesses to install sound ewquipment and made a mess of it. Use caution.
