2008 Mercury Mountaineer electrical issues

I have a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer w/ a V6 and about 130K. About 2 months ago, randomly, the red battery light came on, warning bells started going off, all the interior electrical components stopped working (heater, gauges, dash lights, interior lights, radio), and the service RSC/ABS light came on. Then the vehicle died. I was able to restart it and get it home. Once home I shut it off and was unable to start it. I put a charger on it over night and it started the next day and seemed to run fine for a few hours - then the same problems happened again. This time I had the vehicle towed because it wouldn't restart. Got it home, put a charger on the battery over night and it again started the next day. I took it to a local parts store and the battery and alternator tested OK. Vehicle ran fine for about two months, and then today, out of the blue, the same symptoms occurred. It was about -20F last night and it was parked outside. When I started the vehicle this morning it started perfect, but I did notice that the window wouldn't roll up (went down fine). These symptoms started to occur after I drove it for about 15 minutes (it warmed up for about 15 prior to that). I drove for about another 30 minutes and then got back home and parked the truck. I tried to start it many hours later (7-8 hours) and it started just fine. I let it warm up for about 20 minutes, went to get into the truck to leave, and it all started happening again. Once I started moving the head lights also died (in auto position) which didn't happen any other time. I shut the head lights off and then turned them on manually (not to auto) and they came on, but then I turned the brights on and they went out completely. I was able to turn around and get the truck home (in the dark with no lights) and that was it! Any ideas? My first thought was alternator but when I had it tested a few months ago it tested fine.

This is a devious problem which could lie anywhere. So many things not functioning would perhaps be a ground problem. Maybe take some extra care in cleaning the battery terminals, check if the ground wire is connected to the chassis. Do you have rodents in your area? Maybe they nibbled some wire somewhere?

Try cleaning the fuel pump filter. Under the seat behind the driver lift the carpet and you will find a round cover with six screws remove the cover. The fuel pump is directly below unscrew the retaining round plate and remove the pump. At the base of the pump is a small filter if it is covered in black muck that's your problem. clean and replace. job takes about 10 mins good luck. please let me know how you got on!

SOURCE: Just purchased a 94 Sunbird SE for my son (today)

Take it back to where you got it and make them refund your purchase price. If they refuse and you finianced it go to them, There a law called "The Lemon Law" that makes it unlawful to sell something like that. Sounds like you sure bought one. Don't do anything to it just get hold of the place where you bought it and tell them to come get their junk out of your yard! dhgill1949

Could be a computer problem. First step is to read the codes. This should be in owners handbook or ask the dealer. any auto electrician should be able to help.

My 2003 Mercury Mountaineer has an electrical problem. It started about a year ago with the key fob not working, I have bought 3 and all won't work even after re-programing. now tonight I went to

Could be a windshile leak down the A-Pillar & water
gets into the delayed accy relay for the GEM Module
(Body Computer as ford called it for a few years) & you
get what you have now

Try Goolge as I did a few weeks ago for a relative
He had the same issue with the blower being on &
killing the battery

No real fix I found for the windshield leak
Seem a robot didn't put the rubber sealant
on correctly at the factory fo about 5 years
on several fords.

If it isn't water related then the GEM Module
controls all those body features

If you get a used one & match up the numbers,
you supposedly can avoid buying a reman gem
& the expense of having to reflash it to your factory
built combination

2001 mercury mountaineer starts fine but sometimes won't start at all

I'm going to first assume that you've checked the battery terminals for gunk build-up. If the electrical system is OK, then the problem likely lies in the gas delivery. You might want to check out the starter anyway. Also, replace the fuel filter and put some Sea Foam or equivalent carb/electric ignition jet cleaner in the gas tank. I might add that your car is 17 years old. Start looking. . .

My husband had the same problem with his 02 Mountaineer about 6 months ago. I read somewhere that if you take WD40 & spray the door locks it should stop. We tried it & so far it's worked. Good luck!
