All other electrical systems come on when ignition switch is on, just will not start. Problem began several months ago, just happened occassionally. Now, problem occurs about every other time I shut the engine off. Steering wheel requires more motion to allow ignition to engage.

Your tumblers are probably worn to the point were your only soluation is to replace the ignition switch
SOURCE: A4 steering lock does not engage and car won't turn over
The steering locks don't necessarily engage when the key is removed, I always turn the wheel before exiting to engage it. There are several positions that will allow the pin to lock in but if between these, it may seem that it isn't locked.

its not that had to replace the ignition switch, remove the steering wheel, u will need to buy a ighition removal tool, push plate down, remove plate and the switch will slide right out.. go to advanced auto parts and they will tell you all the tools you will need to replace the switch, and they have a loaner tool program, so just buy the tool and take it back and get your money back.. good luck keith...

Hi what is happening is that your turn off your car and left the wheels turned to one side and specially if your car is parke in a hill what you have to do is to force the steering wheel to the same direction of your wheels this will free up the ignition switch it is going to be hard let me tell you but it will work and this is why your shift don't work once you have the ignition switch free then your shift will work again

I replaced the ignition starter switch (Autozone PN LS922) and still have the problem. I now suspect a pinched wire in the steering column..? Any other suggestions?
