I've been looking at a volvo today , and it seems as tho the gearbox is damaged ( the car will start if the clucth is engaged but will stall even if it is in neutral when the clucth is released ) so my question is wether it is indeed the gearbox ( manual by the way ...) and if so would it be possible to replace the gearbox from a 1998 volvo v40 1.9td ? also both cars have turbos . thank you for you're time !

If the transmission is still operating ok, you can drive it, but you need to get it checked, since a fault has been detected by the transmission computer.

SOURCE: mode w engaged
when the arrow light is flashing it means the car is in what they call "limp home mode" its supposed to reduce power output in order to prevent further damage to the vehicle. usually kicks in when you're "hot rodding" the car for a long period of time. however i have no idea why it would come on if you just shifted from 3 to L unless the computer felt you were endangering the transmission

It could be a number of things. Fuel Flow problem, or electrical apparatus heats up and works inefficiently. You could start from the cheaper, less strainous solutions, in this order: Change Fuel Filter, and clean Nozzles. Fuel Pump, Air Mass Meter.

check your plugs plug wires ignition coils and ignition amplifiers and cam sensor.change fuel filter if it has not been changed in a while.if its partially clogged will cause stalling problems.
