SOURCE: leaking coolant, oil, poorly running, won't shift into gears now

First determine where coolant loss comes from. I would not continue driving, till that step is isolated, or further damage will be done

SOURCE: 98 deville runs hot. i have already changed thermostat

You likely don't want to hear this but Northstar engine a common for head gasket failures. One good test that I use it to fill the coolant tank all the way to the top. Then start it up. If the coolant shoots out of the tank. The heads have a problem.

OK, check that the 2 fans are turning on when it gets to operating temperature. If not, replace the 3 or so relays that control the two speed fans on your car.If that doesn't solve the problem, then you may have to buy new fan motors and also have the harness replaced if necessary to make it cool reliably.

I had this problem on a 1997 Cadillac Deville Limousine that overheated over 157 deg. F and went into its limp mode for cooling the engine off by allowing 1/2 of the cylinders to circulate fresh air into the engine in case all antifreeze would leak out or the car would overheat.

Don't run the Northstar engine too long, more than 45 min. at a time in this limp mode.

Good luck on this repair of your Northstar Engine.

My 03 Camry is running hot but also it's not heating on the inside it just started today I don't know much about cars so if anyone have in idea that would be great

Dont drive it untill you check this!! If you have no heat and running hot,, its an indication of low coolant or bad water pump. You need to have it looked at immediately. Dont drive untill looking under the radiator cap to see if it has water/coolant or is leaking. You WILL destroy your motor if any of the preceding things are not right.

Hi Justin, Just seen the other part of your question and suggest you have a defective water pump the alternative being a cracked cylinder head or block. I think if you get the engine warmed up to operating temperature and observe the water pump you'll see the leakage. DO NOT PUT YOUR HANDS ANYWHERE NEAR A HOT OR RUNNING ENGINE! Let me know if my guess is correct...Please. Regards John

Loosing coolant

the test is easy
it uses the magic of the system has 12 to 14PSI pressure all the time.
hot. so park it get it hot. to 180F (old thermostats fail, they are #1 failure ,so why would you discount that?????)
ok its really hot , my pryo gun shows 180F ,ok real hot is true. no bs.
so now look for leaks.
if you see none
and the passenger toes are dry (heater core drips)
then there are on external leaks,
if true that, then its INTERNAL LEAKS!

head gasket is failing or the A/T or engine oil pan is full of AF.
are you running 50%^ AF all the time, ?????

everywhere you drive do you look after parking, for ground leaks.?
as you leave car and when you come back.
you must. or miss the boat.

Have the cooling system pressure tested ! 3.1 l engine These engines had intake gasket problems , have the radiator cap tested as well . Bad radiator cap will allow coolant lose . Does the oil cap have whitish or dirty color foam on inside ? Coolant leak into the oil .

My car is getting hot and I don't know why. The first time the lever got in the red I turned my car off, and I found it to be ironic that it wasn't steaming. I called this guy I knew and he said...

did you ever put coolant back in the system?? water is only a temporary solution to get to a shop or home......you say no leaks?? then why was the coolant low in the first place?? how old is the car and how many miles on the car..GM lower intake manifolds are know for leaking .. also possable head gaskets are blown and coolant is leaking internal and burning away.. are the cooling fans coming on?? they should turn on as soon as you turn on your a/c ..if your a/c is broken youll have to let the vehicle run to operating temp and see if they come on ..definatly need more info to help with diag.

Cant stop a 201venture van from over heating the heater works the van dont run hot but wen the heater dont heat the motor runs hot

When your not feeling heat coming from the heater it usually means that the coolant level is too low in the radiator. It sounds like you have a coolant leak somewhere which is causing your overheating problem. Fill your radiator and let the engine run for about a half hour with the radiator cap on tight. Then turn off the engine and check for any leaks under the van. If you don't see any leaks under the van then see if the carpeting is wet on the passenger side of the vehicle. If the carpet is wet and it smells like anti-freeze you have a heater core that is leaking. I hope this helps you. :)

What is causing my car to run hot with a smell? its 199

The smell is most likely the anti-freeze you smell. You may need a new overflow cap, which over time will not hold pressure like it should and can cause you engine to run hot and lose coolant. It could be the water pump leaking, a hose leaking. Can you see where you may be losing coolant at? How often does it run hot? Do you have to re-fill after it runs hot. If you not having to add coolant, then your thermostat may be bad or the water pump. But losing coolant could be the overflow cap or a hose, and let's not forget the radiator could have a small hole or split somewhere. It's a matter of finding out where or what are it is leaking in.

1995 ES 300 - antifreeze is draining from reserve. took to a mechanic who did diagnostic. said everything was fine. said no antifreeze in radiator so he topped off. 2 weeks later, the car is running hot...

Is the reserve tank cracked or have a deteriorated hose going to the radiator? Remove the tank to find out. A bad seal on the radiator cap can also lose fluid. A coolant leak anywhere can deplete the coolant level in the radiator and reserve tank. Check your owners manual for antifreeze type and mix ratio with water.
