There was a recent class action law suit settled with GM for this exact problem. You can google gm speedometer lawsuit and get lots of information. Unforutunately for most people I think the warranty was limited to 7 years and 70,000 miles. Which isn't a lot of miles for most people.

If you car isn't covered by the warranty there is a way to "reset" the speedometer.

You can turn the ignition slowly like you are going to start the engine. There is a very small "dead" space where you will see your guage lights go off.

What you want to do is cycle the ignition switch from off to that dead space. Each time you do it your stuck speedometer will move towards zero about 10 mph. So if its stuck on 40 you will have to cycle it at least 4 times.

At first you will probably actually hit the ignition and the engine will try to start.....just release it and try it again.

I know this because I have a 04 avalanche with 80,0000 miles and it has this problem about twice a month.

This is a pretty common issue for Trailblazers to have. Here's a link with more information about these GM gauge problems. And where you can purchase replacement parts on Amazon if you are a DIYer.

2004 mitsubishi endeavor speedometer, tachometer and temp gauge are all not working. how could I fix it?

Hi, I would think it either has a blown fuse or more likely would need a replacement instrument panel installed. Could be $100 to $300 used for the part depending on where you get it. Installing it would probably be 1 or 2 hours labor if you do not know how to.

Chevy trail blaze 2002, speedometer stays at zero miles or goes up and down

The new Gm line From 1998 till present are known for instrument cluster problems. Make sure that there isnt a new calibration to correct this problem ( at the dealer ) and if not you will need a new instrument cluster. Hope this helps.

2003 Silverado 4.8 V8. Speedometer and tachometer, as soon as underway, read past maximum. When engine is shut off guages do not return to "0"

Hi Norton,

What has happened is your speedometer and tachometer drive motors are failing inside your silverado instrument cluster. I see this very often in GM trucks, to fix the problem you need to have your instrument cluster rebuilt.

Check out this article that talks more about it http://drspeedometer.com/chevy-silverado-instrument-clusters-why-they-quite-working

Thanks,

Tachometer stopped working then the speedometer now the service engine comes on randomly and there is a strange noise when starting the blazer and sometimes it almost seems as though it is not going to...

The speedometer and tachometer problem on your Trailblazer instrument cluster is very common on the 03-06 models. It's caused by failing stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board and can be fixed. Check out this page for more on how to get it fixed - Trailblazer tachometer problems
