My car keeps stalling if it sits at a traffic light or stop sign too long. The check engine & check oil light come on then it won't drive. I have to completely turn the car off then turn it back on to get it to go and it sometimes takes a few tries to get it going. Our mechanic could not find a problem because the car wouldn't do that for him. He tried changing the oil filter and put in some dry gas. The car worked fine for 2 days then did it again 4 times in one driving trip today.
Sounds like a fuel problem could be a fuel pump or filter problem you would need to have that checked. other reason for stalling it could be a faulty idle, but with a faulty idle it should still start back up first time.. so would check spark plug leads and plugs. also check for air leaks, its common for the plastic air lines to crack replace with rubber type.

You have one of two very common problems.
Number one may be a stuck open EGR valve
Number two would be a failing Idle Air Control valve (IAC).
Try this: Open the hood & locate the EGR valve, close to the firewall, behind the intake. Find & take with you a small hammer. The next time that it happens, open the hood & tap on the EGR valve. If it is sticking "open" the tapping may dislodge the carbon particles that are keeping it open. When the EGR valve is open, exhaust is getting into the intake at idle, and this will def stall out the car.
There is no repair to the IAC valve, it would need to be replaced if it is bad.
One of these two scenarios will cure your problem, I see it every day.

Often when the battery is disconnected or replaced the computer will lose it's learned idle settings. You could try letting the engine idle in park until the engine temperature comes up to normal and leave it like that for a few minutes, then put the Air con on and let it idle again for a few minutes, then switch the air con off and put it into drive. If it does not stall, let it idle in drive for 2 minutes or so, and then do the same with the Air con on. This should relearn the base idle settings and stop it from stalling on you. Before you carry out this procedure you should make sure that when you replaced the battery you didn't remove any other plugs or knocked anything that may be causing the fault. If you try this procedure and it still stall when you select drive, you will need to get a Mechanic to check the vehicle over.
Hope this helps,
Mark.

I talked to you on the live chat, and I think that you may have missed the end of my typing...
What I went on to say is that more often than not, on the 02 4Runners, the Check and VSC lights in tandem look mainly after the emission system, and, since you stated no issues during the road test, I would guess that it is a fuel issue (too full/loose gas cap). But, if you can get the vehicle scanned, I will be very glad to provide you with more and better info if you provide me with the DTC codes. That would require your guy or an autozone hookup to a scan tool. I hope my clarification helps; and the graciouness of a FIxYa rating for this question would be greatly appreciated

obviously they did disconnect a sensor while they were working on your vehicle.this will set a code in your vehicle's computer. They call this a soft code since there was not a failure but it just did not sense a signal. After reconnecting it clears the code after so many ignition cycles, meaning turning the key on and off so many times. The code is stored in the computer so it would be a good idea to take it to the dealer to check it out and make sure there are no other problems
