2005 Pontiac Vibe Passenger-side Knocking in Dash

When I turn the selector switch to the defrost position I hear a knocking sound comming from the passenger-side dash near the glove box. The knocking sound disappears when I push the recirculate button associated with maximum air conditioning.

I have encountered this many times it is the recirc. door actuator. It is fairly difficult to replace so if you are going to try it I suggest you buy a repair manual, the actuators are fairly inexpensive to purchase, you might want to have a shop replace it for you unless your pretty handy and have a good tool selection

SOURCE: 2005 pontiac vibe just started making like &

you have a bad actuator motor or a broken blend door in the heater box, the noise you hear is the skipping of the gears in the actuator motor, the ehating system along with ac use motors to move doors inside the heater box, the doors control the flow of the air and the temp, you will need to locate the bad one by unplugging one at a time, when noise stops you have the right one, remove it by removing screws that hold it to box. with motor removed look at the hole that controls the door, you will see a small square that the motor turns ,this id part of the door hinge, you should be able to turn side to side, this swings door left and right like a rood door, open or closed, if the door swings good then the actuator is bad, let me get a picture to help you located it, you will located the heater box in the location of the noise, behind glove box, try to acess from the bottom of the dash and also remove glovebox, hope this helps, good dayjohnjohn2_96.jpg

It sounds like your AC compressor is going bad. Most vehicles also turn on the AC when in defrost mode, since the AC also acts as a dehumidifier.

When the ignition is on a knocking noise comes from under the dash on the passenger side

I have the same problem i think.
The noise is something to do with the air con inlet gate???
Q. is there a fuse to isolate this as the position of the problemis above the glove box and can only be accessed with the dash board out and that would be very expensive.

You may have damaged the engine. So that being said either a bad rod bearing or other issue may be something needing to pull the engine. How is the oil pressure. A rod knock is east to hear. To faster the rpms the worse the sound. Rebuild or replace.

I had a similar problem. It'd do a whir/thump routine. There's a motor that opens a door - I think it opens to allow cabin air to recirculate. It would get to the point where it should stop but seemed to "thump" over the stop point. I opened the door and unplugged the motor. Guess, I really didn't fix it. Do like my sister and turn up the radio. Good luck.

This is a symptom of a failing constant velocity joint. This is the "universal" joint on the front driveshaft which couples to the wheels and is usually covered with a flexible rubber boot. You may find the boot is cracked or torn allowing grit and water to get into the mechanism causing it to fail.
