"factory service manual"
87 is a very old car, some even have carbs back then, here, very old.
Generation 3 Tercel.
in usa
"12-valve engine which featured a variable venturi carburetor and later models with EFI." ( a big transistion year) quote wiki)
1.5L 3E 78 hp (58 kW) I4
the 3E engine was here i USA, for EPA reasons....

has all the photos and steps, i can post these CR photo but here are the steps.

Do not disturb the position of the camshaft or the crankshaft during removal.

does this help
if really savvy?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1987-Toyota-TERCEL-Service-Manual-/200715146856?pt=Motors_Manuals_Literature&hash=item2ebb8e1668&vxp=mtr
one more, Navigate (belt co.) says it is interference, so.. dont crank engine util 100% sure, its timed correctly or BOOM see link below and remove 3 spaces.
http: //navigates. gates. com/Parts.aspx?Year=1987&Make=Toyota&Model=Tercel&Engine=4-Cyl.+1.5+L&Class=Passenger+Cars+%26+Light+Trucks&Type=Passenger+Cars
the spaces are at : and the next 2 dots.
i always look here first. or risk bent valves... , a pro mech does the next steps, for all interfrence engines.
reads the manual, FSM, times it perfectly, then sets #1 cylinder to TDC by hand, carefully, then take out is leakdown gage and does a TDC firing leak down test, if passes, its ok, and hand rolling the crank is easy, with sparks out. (last step before , taking keys out of pocket) or risk buying the customer a new engine.

compre un tercel 1997 nesesito saver si biene con cierre centralisado y alarma, poeque veo los suich. pero nada funciona
SOURCE: timing marks
this is a complex fix. if the timing belt is off, you will have to align both of the cams (V6??) to their respective notches on the back plate that protects the belt. You must also align the crank shaft to TDC, top dead center. Put the belt on (with tensioner off) then put tensioner on and release allen key. turn the engine by hand or using the starter two full rotations, the notches on the tops of the cam pulleys should be perfectly alligned with the notches on the back plate. if not, you missed a notch in the wrong spot and have to try again.
i've done this twice, once on a lexus es250 v6, and again on my 94 camry, its one of the hardest things i've ever done when repairing cars. be patient, have a friend help, don't get frustrated. if you really cant get it, have a mechanic come to your house and drop him a few bills to help you. you'll be glad you did

SOURCE: 1999 Tercel. Timing belt/water pump interval change?
Hello tinaromano1: The factory specification are to replace the belt every 90,000 miles in severe service. I would recommend to replace at 90,000 no matter what the service would be. Keep in mind should the belt break there is always a chance engine damage may occur. Should you need further help just ask. Thank You for using FixYa. Roger
