It gets stuck because theres alot of pressure on the pin that holds the transmission in park when on an incline. put the parking brake on before you put it in park.

Try using your emergency brake as well when you park on a hill...it will ease the stress on your shifter.

I have a 2002 ford explore that won't turn over and the shifter won't move. Trina to trouble shoot. Any ideas.

Do you get any action when you turn the key? A click?
Check battery. Dead battery is the first thing to check for. Headlights come on full brightness? Try jumping it?
If shifter won't move, what is it stuck in? If auto, stuck in "park" may simply be that the parking brake is holding tension against the parking gear's workings. If stick, similar, but pressing clutch should clear.

I have an Automatic 1994 Ford Explorer and the gear slector will not change out of park. This has happened before and I got it to move by jiggling the steering wheel and the gear selector. That isn't

the 1997 explore wont come out of park sometimes until you put your foot on the brake

FOOT ON THE BRAKE THE MOVE GEAR

its a safety feature in case your on a hill & for children if left in the car / wagon 4x4 it wont roll away on you

very smart really .

that\'s a floor shift not Colum shift but still might be the same . it still gets me to this day THAT LOL good luck

Car stuck in park

The two most common reasons for the shifter not moving out of park are, a problem with the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid. Or you may be on a steep hill and have too much pressure on the park gear.
You may be able to turn the key switch to the unlock position and take the transmission out of park before you turn the key to the on position.

My 2002 sunfire is stuck in park. Also the key is getting stuck in the ignition. Appreciate any advice.

rock steering wheel back and forth, while turning the key, rock vehicle back and forth to take pressure off transmission shifter. are you parked on any kind of up or down hill grade? if so, that's the problem. start using emergency brake before putting in park.

03 explorer indicates wrong gear

if the shifter is still firm in its location, the neutral safety switch is located on the left side of the transmission. you can loosen it and relalign it to read the correct gear.
