2000 hyundai elantra starts when it wants to

My daughters 2000 hyundai elantra wagon runs well when it starts, it intermittantly just won't start. For example it wouldn't start for her to go somewhere yesterday morning, I took it to the store and had no problems so she took it to work last night and had no problems, she just called me and said it won't start again. If it helps sometimes if you hold the gas to the floor it will start, almost like its not getting gas, but only sometimes??

We actually just had it to the Hyundai dealer/service center-we have no lights on and no trouble codes are showing up.

The problem you describe has many possible causes. Any number of engine management sensors (which are starting to go bad) can cause this problem, the fuel pump is starting to go bad, the engine computer, wiring, connectors, etc.. the list goes on and on. My experience tells me to tell you to take the vehicle into a Hyundai Service Center and try to get it diagnosed. If successful, they'll give you an estimate of repairs (parts, labor, tax, time-frame, etc.). This way you'll know exactly what's wrong and what's required to fix it. Now, since the problem is 'INTERMITTENT', that makes it tough for the technician unless he/she can discover any DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) stored in the computer (ECM - Engine Control Module) - Did the 'Check Engine" light ever come ON? If so, this will help narrow the search and diagnosis.

BEST GUESS for this nearly 10 year old vehicle
#1 - Fuel pump wiring connector - pins/connector known to overheat over time and cause 'intermittent' loss of power to the pump -located under rear seat bottom - center access plate
#2 - Throttle Position Sensor (sofisticated rheostat) Basically a two-circuit potentiometer wiich has developed (or is developing) bad spots resulting in erratic voltage signals being sent to the ECM.
#3 - Engine Coolant Temperature sensor - as the name implies, a sensor whose resistance changes as coolant temperature changes - if malfunctioning, tells the ECM the engine temp is HIGHER or LOWER than it actually is - result is the ECM gives the engine LESS fuel than it needs (starves it) or MORE fuel than it needs (floods it). Either case can prevent engine start.
These sensor circuits (#2 & #3) have been known to act up and NOT set a DTC.
Final NOTE: Intermittent malfunction of the crank position sensor can also be the cause, but usually sets a DTC - in very RARE cases, I have seen the Crank Position Sensor prevent engine starting and NOT set a DTC.

well if she ran it to long with no oil it might be locked up and might be able to turn it over if its not to bad. but you should still get power going to your fuel pump i would check all connection going to fuel pump and no broken wires. try even un plugging battery to see if there's a bypass
