Car was running great got to a stoplight, when light turned green I stepped on the gas and the engine just reved up like it was in park and I was gunning the engine. It finally jerked and started to move, seemed fine when it shifted, got to the next light, when it turned green I gave it some gas and it wouldn't move. I tried to put it into reverse, drive and overdrive and nothing. the engine runs smooth and everything seems fine except it won't move when I put it into gear. Can you please tell me whats wrong with it and how to fix it
Sounds like you have a manual transmission. ?
Worn Clutch plates will give these symptoms
The clutch plates rub together and provide connection between the gear box and the drive shaft if not worn.
Also check the cable for the clutch is not loose and needs a surclip to hold it in at the firewall.
Check if Hydraulic Clutch that there is adequate clutch fluid if low might have leaking clutch master cyclinder
I have experienced this in a car I owned.
Not a lot of fun . Resulted in needing a Tow to repair garage and new clutch was AUD $1200 a couple of years ago.
SOURCE: 2000 ford taurus- wont shift into gear
first check drive axels , since you replaced front springs on struts i assume. it is possible that one of the axels popped out. next if thats ok check fluid level in trans with eng OFF should show over full make a srcribe mark on the stick. then START the eng it should go down to full or just below depends if trans is full or a little low . if level does not drop approx.1/2 in or so then have a transmission shop check for bad splines in torque convertor, that is a comon problem in that car, year and milage do not play a roll a large roll in parts failure in trans any more. not like it use-to.
SOURCE: Can't get my 2000 ford taurus out of park
The gear selector is locked until the system detects the brake pedal is being pressed, the brake circuit then sends a signal to the shifter release solenoid to pull a pin back and let you shift out of park, this is a safety feature required by federal law, U need to have someone see if the brake lights go on when you press the pedal, if they don't check the switch at the top of the brake pedal, if the brake lights work then the little solenoid is defective.
