Hi there i have a mercury cougar 1987 and they are the same thing if your car at the door ajar is a keyboard search at ther trunk the code to open de car and then try to open the trunk check the open mechanism on the trunk sometimes is unplug or clean it a little bit if it donesnt work yo may buy the button at a yunk yard. the manual is only for sale at your local store like kragen, pepboys autozone etc. i bought at one of those places
I know this is WAAYYY after the fact, but:
The trunk button only works when the key is ON. You should hear a double-click sound when the button is activated. This can also be activated from keyless entry, if you have it, by pressing the unlock code followed immediately by pressing the 5 button (unlock code should be located on a sticker on one of the trunk hinges or on control module (box, roughly 6" x 3" x 3") on panel behind rear seat, accessible from trunk with a little work). If you hear the click, but trunk doesn't open, cable between solenoid in trunk lid may need to be adjusted or replaced, or the same with the latch itself.
If no sound from solenoid: There should be 3 wires to the button: ground (black), 12v supply from ignition or accessory (pink/white wire), and 12v control (pink/yellow wire) to the solenoid in the trunk. If you have a trouble light or voltmeter, you should be able to verify that you have 12v + with ignition ON. If not, check fuse or wiring between fuse box and switch. If power is present, probe the pink/yellow wire while pressing the button. If no power, make sure ground is good with an ohm meter between the ground wire at the switch and a chassis screw/bolt (door hinge bolt should work). If no continuity, check for break in ground wire between switch and chassis or loose ground screw/bolt. If ground is good, replace the switch (you can verify the switch is bad by jumping 12v+ briefly to the pink/yellow wire and trunk opens).
If there IS power to the pink/yellow wire when pushing the button, figure bad ground to solenoid, bad solenoid or break in continuity in pink/yellow wire between switch and solenoid. Solenoid is located in trunk lid behind plate on passenger side (follow cable from latch in trunk lid to solenoid). Get a helper to press the button while probing pink/yellow wire at solenoid. If power is present, then it can only be bad ground or solenoid. If you don't have a helper, you can still check ground at the solenoid with a meter.
Sometime there is line behind the gas tank cover you could try that
