2003 awd 2.5 x type jaguar makes a whizzing sound sometimes when trying to start have to move in gear then its ok
The starter is not engaging with the flywheel, sounds like teeth missing on starter ring gear, when you move the car in gear, you are turning the engine, so repositioning the ring gear and then it starts. The starter needs to come off and inspect the gear on the pinion and you should be able to see the ring gear through the starter mounting hole, (you will have to turn engine to see all of it). If it is a worn ring gear, it's gearbox out and a new flywheel. Good Luck.
Testimonial: "is it possible that the solonied is faulty and not engaging the starter motor onto fly wheel."
It is possible, the starter solenoid is double action, it engages the pinion into the flyweel before it starts to turn, moving it in gear/turning the engine indicates worn ring gear, however, next time it happens instead of moving the car in gear, get a piece of wood and hit the solenoid body, don't hit the plastic end, get somebody to try and start the car while you do this. If this works, then yes the solenoid is sticking and a strip down and lubrication may fix the problem, hope you get a result, cheaper and earier than a ring gear job.

SOURCE: Towing a Jaguar
Hi.....
Your car is a AWD.. I don't recomend Dually truck to tow it. With a dually 2 tires will stay on the road. and you have no choice to desengage the AWD. system.
Bucause you will damage the Transfercase. and made the transsmission. work dry.
The best way is a Flat bed.
Is just my suggestion.
Thank you for use fixya..
SOURCE: Starting - no crank -
Try a different key, the chip in the key is probably bad creating the vehicle not to crank as the exciter ring cannot pick up a signal from the master key.

I have a 2002 X type (2 litre. done 44000 miles), dash showed gear box problem, (red circle light up). I pulled out and turned the engine off. 5 minutes later turned the engine on. The engine running but the car would not drive either in drive or reverse. Turned the engine off again and on the car driving but not much power. The care is taken to the Jag. dealer and told is misfiring + some gear box faults. Suggesting to change some coils and see (cost about £200+). also possible need to change the gear box costing about £2500+. Please advice. Shall I go ahead with the repair? Should I part exchange.

I just had the bearing between the drive shaft and transmission changed and the humming stopped. the first half of the drive train is connected to the second half and there is a sealed unit with a bearing in it. the whole shaft needs to be replaced, you cannot just replace the bearing.
