1996 Cobra Mustang surging or loping wont run right, missing

I have a very bad mixture of fuel and air, smells real bad. Tried to fix the problem. Replaced MAF sensor, idle control, throttle position sensor, new plugs and wires. When i start the car it will fire up and then cut off. Goes to about 2000 rpm's and straight to 0. If i try to keep it started it will finally catch up and start to surge or lope. Missing pretty bad too.

i changed that about 3 months ago, tired of sinking money and not fixing the problem lol. Is the ETC on the front of the engine block?

  • eric meeks Jun 01, 2009

yea i'm pretty sure thats the one i changed. thanks. I also have a ticking noise when i first start it up in the morning. have read on the mustang forum that it is pretty commen in that year car. Its not a knock, it is a tick at about 2000 rpm's. It will go away after about 20 min. Any comments on what that might be? Also have some black smoke coming out of tailpipes at high rpm. But i think that is a fuel problem linked to my first problem lol. Havent had any problems out of this car till now. 140,000 miles. thanks for your comments, really appreciate it

just found out today, june 2, that it is my maf sensor. Evidently, if u change a maf sensor and u have add on's on your car, then u have to have your fuel injectors calibrated with your maf sensor. They said to go to Diablo.com and download a program for your car and it will fix it. But you have to take it to a performance shop that does that type of thing. what a bunch of @%^)#%$! lol thanks for your comments and if anyone knows about this calibration thing, drop me a line plz

You should check the engine coolant temprature sensor (ECT).

I believe it is on, next to, or near the thermostat housing.

My 1999 chevy blazer is running rich where I smell fuel fumes can this cause the truck to loose power and not go over 30 but the engine runs smooth

Most likely, A good "burn" is the right Fuel-air mixture. Too much fuel bad burn lots of black smoke. Not enough fuel It may not burn at all. Any emission codes? I will bet it won't pass an emissions test, so get it fixed. Probably affects mileage. Do you smell fuel in the engine compartment? you have a dangerous leak. Or do you smell at exhaust? Do you smell in the cab?
Probably leak in engine bay, or even under the truck's fuel line, filter, pump. or tank.

Just installed a rebuilt carb. on a 1984 Dodge ram D-150, when coming to a stop it lopes and sometimes stalls, also when turning left it stutters and sometimes dies, worse when its been ran for a while.

You probably need to adjust the air/fuel mixture screws. Sounds like its running a little too rich. When you first start the engine, is the idle speed real low? If it is, then this is more evidence that its running rich

What exactly is the iac valve? It sounds like there are rocks inside the supercharger. I just wonder if fixing the coupling would make the car stop missing and loping? Could it be the iac valve causing the...

The Idle Air Control valve is what monitors your idle air/fuel mixture. It is is not functioning at normal parameters, then the car will not idle properly. It sounds like your supercharger my have a faulty bearing and may need to be repaired. Your idle issues may be linked to the IAC but it could also be your throttle control sensor. Another problem is the throttle plate shaft will wear on the housing and cause a vaccuum leak causing the air/fuel mixture to be lean. Do you have any trouble codes? If so, have these codes read and it will narrow down the problem.
Hope this helps.

86 mustang 5.0 fuel injected. At cold, starts great and runs stong and firm. After driving about 10-15 mins it starts sputtering and wants to lope and die at idle. Driving, it hardly idles at a stop and...

Your fuel air mixture is wrong. Just like a choke. When it is cold it dumps more fuel in, when it warms up it is supposed to mix in more air. It does not seem to be doing this. You need to have that adjusted. In the meantime you can adjust you idle a little higher. You can do this by adjust a screw where the throttle cable sits on top of the engine.... I think your 88 mustang contols the fuel air mix with a manifold absolute pressure sensor. Ive seen were the vacume line going into one has worked loose or broken cousing rough idle and throttle. llso check that the idle air control valve isn't plugged up with soot. This would also result in rough or loping idle but would be fine once the engine is hot. Let me know if this was helpful, good luck.
