ENGINE HOT A/C OFF
Cooling System Description and Operation
I replaced the thermostat after confirming it with a local dealer that the thermostat was probably the problem.
The new thermostat fixed it
The gauge quiting etc.etc. sure wasnt pointing to be just a bad thermostat to me but Im sure glad it fixed it
Replace the coolant thermostat. The code is different on a Nissan and actually refers to a thermostat fault. Replace the thermostat and clear the codes, you're fixed
First, start by replacing the thermostat. It's located under the coolant filler cap / thermostat housing on a 2.4L dohc engine block on the upper left (passenger side)of the engine. We just replaced one in ours, but when we took the thermostat housing off, we discovered that the thermostat had broken/exploded, and that the lower thermostat spring and retainer were probably stuck inside the engine cooling galleries. We ran the car without replacing the thermostat, but it did not improve. The engine was still getting hot, and the heater blower still wasn't blowing hot air. We're going to try to replace the thermostat with the correct one (parts place gave us the wrong one and it didn't fit at all...), bleed the air out of the system again and see if there's some kind of link to there having to be a thermostat in the system. If that doesn't fix it, I'll have to look at the water pump to see if it's actually moving the water or not. If the water pump isn't functioning, the water isn't getting moved from the hot block to the radiator (where it's cooled through the radiator and goes back into the suction side of the water pump). If the pump is fine, and the new thermostat doesn't fix the problem, we'll have to investigate the possibility that the thermostat parts that got into the water galleries is somehow restricting the cooled water flow back into the engine, and that will be an expensive fix, I presume. Like all other cooling system problems though, start with replacing the thermostat. It's fast, cheap and will let you know where to look next if that doesn't fix it, but that problem is usually only a thermostat issue.
A FAULTY THERMOSTAT STUCK OPEN WILL EFFECT GAS MILEAGE AND CAUSE POOR OR NO HEAT CONDITIONS.THERMOSTAT NOT A HARD JOB TO FIX.ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS DRAIN OUT SOME OF THE COOLANT IN A DRAIN PAN.DRAIN COOLANT LEVEL BELOW THERMOSTAT.IF YOU HAVE 3.8L ENGINE THERMOSTAT HOUSING ON TOP INTAKE MANIFOLD.IF YOU HAVE 5.3L ENGINE FOLLOW TOP RADIATOR HOSE IT WILL LEAD YOU TO THERMOSTAT HOUSING.REMOVE HOUSING THERMOSTAT INSIDE THE HOUSING.IF YOU HAVE WATER INLET ANDTHERMOSTAT IN ONE COMPLETE UNIT OR HOUSING YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE WATER INLET HOUSING WITH NEW THERMOSTAT.THIS TYPE UNIT WILL HAVE LONG PIPE WITH BYPASS PIPE WITH WATER INLET WITH THERMOSTAT. ONCE YOU REPLACE THERMOSTAT.IF YOUR RED ARROWS OFF AND HEAT STILL DONT WORK THE DEALERSHIP WILL HAVE TO CHECK IT OUT.WITH NEW THERMOSTAT AND PRESSURE CAP.MAKE SURE GET COOLANT LEVEL CORRECT.SEE HOW HEAT WORKS.IF NOT YOU HAVE A ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AT AC AND HEATER CONTROL SWITCH.
A thermostat can be replaced easily enough but there is no repair. It is inside the "goose neck" at the engine end of the upper radiator hose. The thermostat and gasket should be under $10 if you wish to change it yourself. Make sure you replace any coolant with the same kind.
Hi,
The thermostat is located in a housing, mounted on your engine with the top radiator hose attached. It is relatively easy to replace.
Be sure to put the new thermostat in the correct direction (notice direction of old one before taking it out). Also, be sure to clean the old gasket from the housing and be careful not to break the housing... many are cast aluminum and overtightening a bolt can easily create a headache. :o)
Hope this helps... Good luck!
