Particularly noticeable when the engine has not long been running, the interior lights all dim, flicker and sometimes go off completely for a few seconds like there is loss of power, and now the air-con has started doing the same. When the car has been running for 10-15 minutes it seems to be ok.

it starts from cold because the auto choke is on ,allowing a richer mixture ,try removing the sender unit in the tank and seeing if the connection from the pump to the outlet connection is ok or leaking causing a loss of fuel pressure

Its exactly the abs module! and its keeping the ecu from communicating with the rest of the car, when you remove the module your tac will come back alive and the oil light will turn off. There is way to trick the ecu to thinking the abs module is working but it involves taking out the module, it is fairly simple. My email address is [email protected], email me, and I will give you pictures and instructions on what to do. Its really easy, your abs and break light will go off along with the beeping!

It sounds as if your vehicle may have severe water damage to the engine. The engine sensors on the golf are suseptable to water damage and can result in epc light that you are seeing on your dash, or so i was told by VW. I replaced all the sensors, alternator and the computer on my original engine, but this action didnt fix the problem. So i bit the bullet and replaced the engine, and haven't had a problem since. If you do the labor yourself it can be done as cheap as $4000. I hope this helps mate.
good luck
