1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4wd 6cy auto. Have a noise that we can't find. Thought it was the fly wheel, replaced this. Noise still there. Took plugs out one at a time. At #4 with the plug out the noise was gone. Dropped the oil pan and notecied rod bearings worn. Replaced them. Noise still there. With a stethoscope the noise is more to the rear of the engine from below. Move forward or rearward of the rear of the oil pan the noise gets fainter. At idle speed the noise sounds like valve noise. At @2000 rpm the noise is almost gone but @2500 rpm the noise is back. Engine has lost no power and the oil pressure is good. What are we looking at?

HI.WELL I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START. FRIST IF IT WAS THE FLYWHEEL IT WOULD DO IT WHEN THERE IS NO STRAIN ON THE MOTOR WHEN DRIVING. THE SAME IF YOU HAD A BAD BEARING. IF I COULD JUST HEAR IT RUNNING, IT COULD BE A BAD OIL PUMP THAT COULD CAUSE IT TO RADDLE UNTIL YOUGET THE OIL BUILT UP ENOUGH TO STOP IT. HOPE THIS HELPS. JIMBO

You probably messed up a rod or caused piston damage your going to need more than a head gasket usauly when you over heat a car you causing the pistonts to expand more then they need to causing scouring and exsisive piston ware by the sound of it and the year your better off replacing the whole motor or completely rebuilding the old one wich will cost more then a use motor! good luck!

Have talked to a couple mechanics. They say in maybe wrist pin or piston slap. Going on the look for a replacement engine. Thanks
