Replace the timing belt tensioner if belt or chain still loose.

gran prix 3.8 engine has a timing chain.it suppose to be tight when you install it you torque cam sprocket bolt to 74 ft lbs plus additional 90 degree turn.if the new chain got alot of slack you got wrong size chain.you got either a 3.1 - 3.4 engine chain.because the gran prix had 3.1 -3.4 -3.5-3.8- 5.3 engines. .

Changing belts

at least one item on every belt system has a way to be adjusted to loosen the belt, and also tighten it,,, check to see if the item has an enlongated hole on its mounting bracket and even if the bolts are loose sometimes you need a lever to help loosen it to slide it looser or tighter. when you finally do get all of your belts on, push down on them with you finger to see the amount of deflection doesn't exceeed 1/'2 inch...hope tjhis helps

2005 grand prix wont start?

If you deffinitely have fuel and spark then it must be a timing issue.

It's ok have fuel & spark but if in the wrong place at the wrong time it won't start. Check that the timing marks to and bottom are correct, the belt could have jumped.

Is it back firing into the inlet when trying to crank? Like a loudish popping noise.
