Kia sedona. Knocking sound from Engine

Kia sedona. Ticking sound from engine compartment that increases when accelerating, more apparent in cold weather.. any ideas??? 2002 Kia Sedona... Had this van for 2 weeks. Ran great, not a sound out of the motor... Started it up one day and got a loud knock in the motor all of a sudden. Hooked it to the computer n said #5 cylinder has a misfire. Don't know where to go from here. Don't have a lot of money to fix.

Sorry... loud knocking... One person said it may be the oil pump (because with the motor running they cant see any oil when they took the oil cap off)... another said it may be a collapsed lifter... don't know which way to try first...

  • Anonymous May 29, 2009

ok... I'm looking for an opinion... should we replace the oil pump n see if that works??

  • Anonymous May 29, 2009

    Thank you

  • Anonymous May 30, 2009

There was no ticking before... I don't know where that info came from... I think it added it from someone elses forum... It was quiet before... not a sound from the motor, We drove home from camping, started it up a couple hours later and had the knock. There was no warning sound before... It just all of a sudden started.

  • Anonymous May 30, 2009

Oh, and it's not a diesel

  • Anonymous Oct 27, 2009

Thank you all for the help! What happened was the timing jumped so something was hitting the piston causing the knocking. Had to fix all that, new timing belt, so on n so forth.... $1600!!!!

  • Anonymous Oct 28, 2009

Yes its high, but I had to get it done. Thats the only vehicle I had at the time... what pissed me off was it took him a month to fix it!

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

I see two descriptions of the sound:

    loud knock & ticking

    Could you please clarify?

    thanks...

I assume by now you have this problem fixed, but if not, or for the benefit of others looking for help, try replacing the coil on the #5 cyl as well as the injector. Ours did same thing, except fault code was on #2 cyl, so I got the parts from local parts store for about $150 total, and completed the repairs myself on my wife's 2003 Sedona. Now i can start on the rear heater issues, the knocking sound coming from the LF tire area while in motion, and replacing all brake pads. 92,000 on the odo. I'll spend the extra $ and go with the Honda Odyssey next time.

I have 2004 sedona 3.5. had the same problem at 83000 mi. Opened left side head and found a screw embedded in the head .This caused valve and piston damage. I dont know hwere the screw came from or how it would have gotten in there. replacing valve and piston as we speek. KIA would not help even though this could only have heppened at initial construction of motor.

Hi, if this is a diesel it sounds like an injector fault, which may have been caused by fuel contamination from a faulty high pressure fuel pump. Delphi diesel fuel pumps have a bearing inside that are proned to breaking up and causing metal particles to go around the system and damaging the injectors. If its a petrol it could simply be a misfire caused by a plug, plug lead or ignition coil. All of these parts are very expensive so seek advice from a Kia dealer., or give me more details about it

If the oil pump is bad, it would likely be affecting more than just one cylinder/lifter.

I'm not familiar with the "look-in-the-oil-filler-tube-for-oil" test to see if the oil pump is good.

I wouldn't bet on the bad-oil-pump concept.

The bad lifter sounds like a good bet, especially when it seemed to start out as a "tick". I agree with consulting a pro.

You dont have a choice. if this is not handled it might make you loose this car totally. Consult an expert in your location to have a look at the cylinder.

SOURCE: Kia sedona. Ticking sound from

my 05 sedona was doing the same thing. Turns out the oil grade was to high. You need to get the oil changed with 5 - 30 grade. Add moa treatment and then drive in 2nd around your block keeping it between 2,500 & 3,000 rpms when you drive around the block. That will bleed your lifters and should fix your problem.

2008 oil leak and engine ticking

An engine used oil for lubrication and colling. If there is no oil then there is no lubrication. No lubrication means lots of heat and friction. Is it a ticking or banging noise? I do believe it is an ohc engine so it couldnt be a lifter ticking. It is probably a rod knocking. It so then it will more than likely need an engine

Kia optima engine ticking

sounds like lower end bearing damage (connecting rod) when oil level drops at interstate speed a connecting rod bearing will seize very quickly thus causing the bearing to spin in the rod and enlarge clearance . that is the knocking sound you here .

I am having the same problems with 2003 Kia Sedona

Drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump. Filter is attached to the fuel pump. Sounds like the fuel pump is failing.

Engine knock

2002 KIa Senoda engine. If an engine is knocking it can be that the engine has low idle in fuel pump.because of some reasons that only less gas can enter the engine. that is why you have to adjust the fuel idle until the engine will not knock .

hi how are you? a ticking sound would be from one or more bad lifters. tyr to give it a oil change with a lighter weight oil for the winter.if that does not get rid of it then your lifters are no good and would need to be replaced.

Ticking sound from engine compartment

From what you're saying, it sounds like the lifters are tapping, almost like a clicking if i'm correct. Go to Advance Auto Parts, and buy some Seafoam in a can, you can pour some directly into your oil, and the noise should sieze. Also pour some in your gas, it really helps the engine. If you ask the cashier, they will take you right to it.
