My husband was driving our 2002 Toyota Highlander (3.0L, 2WD) & swerved to avoid hitting the car in front of him, & ended up sliding into a mud pit. He was stuck & shooting mud up everywhere trying to get out. Some good samaritans stopped & pulled him out... Then the car stalled, started back up then stalled again & won't restart. We cleaned the mud out & checked for lose cables, battery is good... Any ideas? Is it possible he blew the engine revving it trying to get out of the mud???

Sounds like you have a gremlin running around under the hood, just kidding. The check engine light was probably caused by a failing sensor, or it could have been a loss of oil pressure due to the old oil. If the problem never returns then I think it is safe to say it was a loss of oil pressure, but if it is a failing sensor this will occur again. When and if it does happen again do not reset the computer, take the car to an autozone(they diagnose check engine lights for free) if you have one around you. The diagnostic will tell you exactly what sensor has caused this, but if you reset the computer ther is nothing to diagnose. And a dealer or shop can charge 60-90 dollars for the diagnsis. Based on my expirence if it is a sensor it is probably the MAP(Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor) this sensor is probably the only one that will completly shut down the car, most other sensors will fail and your check engine light comes on but the car stays running.

Hope this helps

SOURCE: Car dies while driving

I think that your crank angle sensor failed. Is the check engine light on?? if so, scan it and get code. If the code is P0335, than you need new crank angle sensor. Nissan has been having some problems with those even on other Nissan products. (Altima, Pathfinder and so on) Good luck.

SOURCE: 2002 sequioa sudden stall

Often when the battery is disconnected or replaced the computer will lose it's learned idle settings. You could try letting the engine idle in park until the engine temperature comes up to normal and leave it like that for a few minutes, then put the Air con on and let it idle again for a few minutes, then switch the air con off and put it into drive. If it does not stall, let it idle in drive for 2 minutes or so, and then do the same with the Air con on. This should relearn the base idle settings and stop it from stalling on you. Before you carry out this procedure you should make sure that when you replaced the battery you didn't remove any other plugs or knocked anything that may be causing the fault. If you try this procedure and it still stall when you select drive, you will need to get a Mechanic to check the vehicle over.

Hope this helps,
Mark.

This happened to my wife's Ford Escape and it ended up being the alternator. We had to replace it and it cost around $700-800.

SOURCE: My 2002 2500HD 4x4 front axle not engaging

Try jacking up one side of the front and putting it on a jackstand. Then turn key on(but dont start it) and put it in 4hi. Try to spin the tire in the air. The drive shaft should not turn nor the wheel. If the wheel does then maybe the acuator is not moving in the axle. It worked when you pulled it out but it might be hanging up on something in the axle.

Where is the spark plugs located for the 2002 4 cylinder highlander located. Plan on replacement.

First, remove the no. 1 engine cover. Locate the ignition coils, these will be squarish-looking packs with spark plug wires (4 of them) coming out. The wires should be going to the spark plugs, which are on the front and back side of the engine.
Grab the ignition coils or spark plug wires by the thick plastic piece at the end of the wire. Squeeze the end and turn it to release it from the spark plug. Pull back to remove the plug from the engine.
Slide the spark plug socket over the spark plug. The most common size of spark plug socket used on a Toyota Highlander is 16mm. Turn the socket to the left to unscrew and remove the spark plug from the cylinder well.

We purchased a 2003 Toyota Highlander and we were told in writing it was AWD. It does not act like any of the other AWD vehicles we have owned. It acts like a 2WD. It can' get up the tiniest of hills...

you should have a front differential like you have a rear differential-look under the car, there should be two axle housings, one front and one back.

2002 Toyota Highlander 2WD, 4 cylinder

Welcome to FixYa. I'll be glad to help you out.

Code P-1150 indicates an Air-Fuel sensor range/performance issue.

The air fuel sensor is similar to an oxygen sensor, but it does a different job.

Without in-depth analysis on a scan tool that can read the output of the A/F sensor, it is hard to tell you exactly what is happening, but prior experience indicates that you probably need to replace the A/F sensor.

You would do well to purchase a genuine Toyota A/F sensor, as the cheaper 'aftermarket' units do not perform well; your check engine light may remain on after you replace the sensor with an aftermarket

Thanks for choosing FixYa for advice.

How put 4 whels drive

If your Highlander is AWD - that means it automatically detects when you need extra traction - and the other wheels engage automatically. You can't turn it on or off manually. If it's not working, you either have the 2wd model - or there is a problem, and you should take it to your favorite shop. Good luck!

I have a 2002 toyota highlander 2wd limited and the heat/AC fan stopped working. Do you know where the fuse is so i can check it before i take it for service. Or is there a simple solution

fuses are right behind the battery. the lid has a "map" to show you which is which... also there may be a relay in the same fuse box that could be checked
