In order to replace a heater core in a 1998 gmc jimmy the coolant must be completely drained and the entire dash including radio, vents and panel covers must be removed. four screws hold the top portion(closest to the windsheild) in place. they can be found under the windshield defrost vent. after the entire dash is removed a safety harness under the steering column must be removed and the steering column must be dropped to the driver seat. The heater core housing(black plastic) is located right center of the dash and is a two part housing one piece on top of the other. the housing is attached to the fire wall and must detached before replacement can continue. after detaching the housing from the fire wall separate the housing by unscrewing the six screws that hold it together. the heater core is now exposed. disconnect the heater core from the two hoses and discard. installation is the un installation process in reverse.
Good luck, it is a very long and drawn out process that is not accomplished in just an hour or two . make sure you have most of the day or several afternoons to finish . i started this and it took me 2 afternoons to take apart and put back together

Heater not working from my 97 GMC jimmy. Change

Do you feel heat on both heater core hoses? If not then it might have a blocked heater core, low coolant level, defective heater control valve or a blend door issue.

My heater will only blow out of the dash vents and won't move to floor or defrosters. Many have said to change the vacuum hoses. Can anybody tell me where to find them? Do I need to take apart the dash?

Heater flap works on vacum lines. My jimmy had same problem. Found out flap broke inside heater core. Gmc had a default. If something breaks it goes to defrost as safety precaution. Or a vacum leak in a hose to heater.

Heater core replacement

You do not have to do anything with the air conditioning, its all inside car under right side of dash. 1. go under hood and unhook heater hoses and bracket( if equiped) from core tubes. 2. go under dash right side remove 13mm bolt far right under dash thats so you can pull dash out a little ways to get cover off heater where heater core is.3. 1/4 in. socket set and 1/4 in. socket take screws out holding cover on look close there is one hidden top far right can't remember how maney 5 or 6 i think, screws all out use a little finess and remove cover and there will be your heater core. Good luck.
