There are nylon bushings in the steering column that wear out, so you can use a lithium or a graphite lubrication to extend their life a little longer. But eventually they will need replaced.

SOURCE: transmission wont shift on 93 plymouth voyager

Do you know if you have a 3 speed trans or a 4 speed trans? If it is a 4 speed , the (D) on the shift indicator will have a box around it. I need to know which transmission you have, then I can help.

Hi:
This same thing happened to my daughter,s car, and it ended up being fixed with a transmission speed sensor. This sensor not only runs the speedometer, it helps tell the transmission when to shift too.

SOURCE: 98 Plymouth Voyager Transmission won't go or stay in drive

Check your EATX relay in the fusebox.
EATX = Electronic Automatic Transaxle
the relay is for power supply to TCM (tranny control module) - 4speed will only work in limp mode (park, reverse, neutral, and 2nd gear only) if TCM is off. The relay controls the solenoid with allows fluid flow into the transmission.

if the shift process is through a cable then check the cable for wear and fraying, rust or dry. If it is through linkage check for worn /rusted /tight connections

Hard to shift gears when cold

Could be the shift cable is dry for oil due to the age. You may have to replace it. You could disconnect the linkage at the trans and try it to confirm.

99 malibu, key won't turn in ignition (it's new cylinder and casing that worked fine before I changed gear shift back to park and connected the battery)

Shake ya sterring wheel from side to side and try turning ya key. The lock could be stuck and needs to be freed up. This should do the trick.

Ignition stuck key won't turn to start car!

Gear shift is not totally in the park position - had the same problem with a 2011 Acura TL - a rubber band kept the gear shift lever from totally seating in the park position.

I have a 96 f 150, automic & shift lever very loose in all gears. very hard to find drive, neutral, reverse.

It sounds like a bad shift collar on the column or the shift tube inside the column. Somtimes the best cure is to pick up a used steering column at a salvage yard. The last one I bought cost about
$65.00. Hope this helps.

HOW DO YOU REPLACE THE SHIFT INDICATOR? MINE STAYS IN PARK NO MATTER WHAT GEAR YOU PUT IT IN

First order a new one from a Ford dealer(about $40). Remove the lower dash panel under the steering wheel. remove the instrument trim panel.
Most of the time its just the mount on the steering column. if so remove the cable from the column, remove the wheel, insert the cable in the new bracket. when done shift the selector to drive and adjust. Start car run through gears and check again in drive.

Gears shifter will not engage the gears i think it is the trans linkage where is it located?

it's a cable under car . may be just loose connections. floor shift?

column shift?

check under hood first on driver side where transmision is. look for loose fasteners. then you might have to remove console for floor shift or plastic shrouds if column shift.

Shifter won't shift gears

Have someone look @ linkage on trans. while someone moves shift lever thru the gears. If lever @ trans doesn't move then its in the linkage between the column and trans. (possible clip or pin broken @ linkage jounts). If lever @ trans moves then its a trans. internal prob.
