2003 jeep liberty sport. Was on highway doing 60 when it lost engine power. pulled over, and waited a couple minutes. Started rough, but when I put it in drive, it died. Waited about 30 mins, and tried again. Drove about 4 miles and the same thing. Starts rough, and dies when you put it in gear. The ODB light is on, and I know I should get it checked, but if there is a common solution, would rather go that route. Can't get it to a ODB reader at this time.
Most large parts stores read codes free. Most common cause is crank sensor, but I'd have code checked before buying anything.
Fuel filter is another possibility, but that will not set a code...Its located on top of the fuel sending unit on the tank and is a combination regualtor/filter.
0320 is no crank reverence singnal at the computer...means crank sensor isn't sending signal Or wiring between sensor & pcm is damaged. Likely its the sensor..
Glad its up and running...The only two things anyone on the "free side" get out of this is a thank you and a rating...Will you rate answers?
Before, you mentioned damage on the metal part...could it have been hitting the flywheel? If there is similar marking on the new one. I'm not sure yet but I'm starting to see a pattern like perhaps someone has let a bunch of sensors get out that are a bit too long. If you see scuffing on end, put a small spacer under the new one to back it up a bit...they should work with up to 1/4" clearance but I wouldn't go that far.
It looks like electrical overheat...let me think ...be back later
there should be no continuity between b&c terminals on the sensor. But, on a cold unit, it may give you an erroneous reading since the problem has been intermittent, and temperature related to some extent.
What I see in your photos appears to be the result of electrical overheating...This can happen if there is a poor system ground somewhere that increases resistance . My diagrams are so poor that I can't decipher them with any confidence but it appears that voltage comes from or goes to the main computer but is also shared with all sensors. If you had not pulled that code, I would also have mentioned the fuel pump as a potential problem...when they begin to fail, they often run for a while then get hot and shut down. Also very similar to what you reported. It would not hurt to make a quick check there when vehicle shuts down. Even with the code present, I don't always trust that the entire problem is where you think it would be...Will try to get better info and relay it to you if I find anything good.

I know nothing about cars but the same thing happened to my '03 Liberty exactly as you're describing. I also noticed it would die turning a corner at low speed sometimes. Also, when I had it in for smog check, they said some of the sensors had no data on them and they asked if I had disconnected the battery recently, which I hadn't.
The battery tested weak so I replaced it and have had no problems since then. That was 3 months ago.
I had the exact same problem on my 2003 Jeep Liberty. I had 72,000 miles on it. I managed to get it to my repair shop. The issue was not only the crank sensor, but also the cam shaft sensor. When I checked the computer fail codes, both codes came up. I replaced both of them and have not had a problem since. I contacted my local Jeep dealer and it seems that this is a common problem.
Try changing the inline fuel filter first it won't be expencive to buy and you can do it your self with a manual.rate this .thank's

Ok, so a friend of mine had a reader and I get p0320 ignition/distributor engine speed input circut
no clue what that means
Replaced the crank sensor. Looking at it, it seems like there is some electrical damage on the metal piece. New one is working so far. No obd errors as of yet.
Thanks for the suggestions.
well, it died again. not sure what the problem is now. something must be causing the crank sensor to fail.
To me it looks electrical.
I can't see the newer one. The Jeep is on the side of the road at the moment.
