1990 Legacy: speedometer not working...

The first thing you can always do is check your fuses. there might a blown fuse that need replacement. The 1990 Legacy has a mechanical speedometer . The speed sensor is a read switch in the speedometer head itself. So if your speedometer is functioning ( needle working properly ) then the internal read switch is defective. That requires replacing the entire speedometer OR it can be a defective connection between the speedometer and the ECU.If the speedometer is not working, then you can have a defective speedometer, cable, speedometer cable adapter ( on the tranny ) or internal speedo gear in the tranny. Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Speedometer and Odometer quick working. How do I

Follow the speedometer cable from the firewall, down to the transmission. It should bolt in the transmission, remove the cable from the transmission, and turn the gear to check to see if speedometer is working, if not, it's most like the speedometer head unit.

I have an 1992 88 oldsmoblie and my speedometer stop working whats wrong

Unscrew the speedometer cable from the side of the transmisson. Pull the cable out of the transmisson. While someone else sits in the drivers seat and looks at the speedometer you turn the end of the cable quickly. If the speedometer doesn't move the cable is faulty. Replace it
To check the speedometer only disconnect the cable from the speedometer and insert a small screwdriver.Turn the screwdriver quickly. If the speedometer doesn't move then the speedometer is faulty and must be replaced.

My speedometer is not working along with my odometer.

If your speedometer is not electronic, unfasten the speedometer cable from the back of the dashboard instrument assy. Replace the odometer & speedometer unit with another one. Reconect the speedometer cable. This should do the trick.

You should have a speedometer cable that runs from the back of the trani, thru the fire-wall, and into the back oh the gauge cluster.

Speedometer wont work

HI. If your speedometer needle doesn't move, or if it flutters, your speedometer cable may be bad.

To determine if it is the cable, disconnect the cable casing from the transmission and from the back of the speedometer on the instrument panel. Draw the cable out from inside of the casing. The cable looks like a twisted piece or wire. If the cable is broken or if it is dry or brittle. It probably needs to be replaced. If the cable is intact and the same length as the cable casing, the problem is likely the speedometer head.

I would also advise to check the speedometer gear as well.

The speedometer gear is located on the output shaft. Inspect it for damage.

This gear rarely suffers damage because the gear from the speedometer that meshes with it is usually made of a softer material. Sometimes, the speedometer gear on the main-shaft is replaceable. A clip can hold it in place or it can be a pressed fit. A special puller is available to pull these gears on the car/truck.

Replace speedometer calbe

Replace the Speedometer Cable

1 - Remove the old speedometer cable from your car, first take off the doghouse and then the engine cover.

2 - Remove the screw underneath the dashboard and take down the steering column. This will give you access to the back of your speedometer.

3 - Take off the drive shaft bolt, and "O" ring, insert the speedometer cable through the firewall.

4 - Remove speedometer cable securing clamps from the engine compartment and on the transmission.

5 - Release the drive shaft nut from the "right angle" adapter (The nut is attached to the back of the transfer case).

Installing the Speedometer Cable

1 - Place the square end of the speedometer cable into the adapter and secure the drive shaft nut.

2 - Pull the speedometer cable through the firewall to the rear of the speedometer.

3 - Secure the "O" ring and attach the speedometer cable to the rear of the speedometer/odometer. It should be engaged in the speedometer's square hold. Tighten the drive shaft nut again.

4 - Replace the clamps that will secure the speedometer cable onto the transmission and in the engine compartment. Replace the engine cover.

5 - Drive your car slowly to be sure your speedometer is working properly. If it is, replace the doghouse. If you're stilling having problems, take the car to your mechanic.
