Elictrical system flashes on/off, then dies.

I put a new battery in my 1996 Town Car and it started right up. Drove around the block, parked in my driveway and as I was idling, the car went dead. I replaced the battery due to a similarr problem just before.

Jump starting the car does not work. I am thinking alternator. Am I on the right track? If so, how do I replace it?

Not at all. Nothing at all. Except the battery indicator on the dash board. I put the battery in new, all was bright. When it suddenly died, there was nothing. Not even the inside lights which will come on with very low battery. No engine turnover at all.

When you were driving, after replacing the battery, if u felt the car loosing some horse power, until it dies, then YES its your alternator, it is not recharjing the battery with power, so the car keep on sucking the battery until it dies, try to check your alternator, or check your the plug "located on the alternator itself"

Must be something else besides the alternator. I've known cars with bad or un-plugged alternators to run up to 100 miles on a new battery before the battery is drained of power.

What do you think is wrong

intermittents are sometimes hard to diagnose out !! and this seems as one , im curious though what made them wiggle the relays and fuses ?? was there a previous problem there ?? depending on year of manufacture of car , is weather or not the cars own pcu can help diagnose what made car stop , as later models "remember " what there last condition was that shut off engine , of course this requires diagnostic equipment to see this info that typically car owners don't own , but a qualified service tech does and knows how to use it to find your problem

My car started just fine this morning. I was sitting in the parking lot for about a half hour and tried to start it again and it wouldn't start. The AAA man said it was the battery but my light did

A "light" never comes on to tell you your battery is dying. If you have the original GNB battery from DaimlerChrysler, you\'re WAY past due for replacement. 2008 Avengers, especially the 2.4L PZEV engined models are NOTORIOUS for being hard on batteries, especially if all you do is putt around town, due to both the onboard alarm system and the positive EGR pump, which runs right after you shut the car off every time, putting about a 30 amp load on your bettery without the alternator charging. Frequency battery maintenance and equalization charging is essential in the case. Also, Chrysler started using those horrid stainless steel "post straps" back in the \'90s, and those damned things will cause oxidation of the lead on the posts, due to dissimilar metals. Either way, service your battery, or replace. You\'re obviously from the south somewhere; it\'s SIT, not "set".

I would want to know if you have at least 12 volts at the battery posts, and also at the starter. You need to know if the cables are causing the problem, or something else.
Once the engine starts, it should be running off the alternator, but it still needs the battery in the circuit.

Welcome to the world of BMW's. return the car to the seller. you got a bad one. You got an electrical short draining the battery. Bring a blank check and sign it over to the dealer. They're going to have to run through the entire electrical system to find the short. That work alone is worth more than the a used up 2001 325i.
