Car stalls as I pull away from a stop.

1986 Ford Tempo GL, While ideling after the car has warmed up it will suddenly stall. It does this as I start to drive away from a stop sign and giving it a moderate/normal amount of throttle. Is the idle set to low? Or is it a transmission issue. The transmission seems to be fine. I changed teh fuel filter and that seemed to help a little. But it is still a regular problem. The car has only 88,000mi.

I have a 1986 ford tempo GL 2.3L throttle body injection vin with a X my problem is when I make a right turn my car tries to stall and when I slow down to stop then it only goes 35 up steep hills

You need to check the fuel pressure and run an EEC-IV fault code tests both the running test and the passive key on engine off test. To run the fault code test using the check engine "blink" method go to the link below. The diagnostic connector is under the hood it is a red triangle shaped connector, it may have a cover on it that is black, it just pulls out of the cover.

Stalling isn't a fair description of what is happening. You are describing engine cutting out or breaking down. The question is, is it cutting out like the ignition has been turned off or is it fading out like it has run out of fuel and once it stops how long before it will restart?

If it doesn't restart immediately there is time to do some basic checks and discover whether there is a spark and/or an injection pulse, etc.

Personally I wouldn't pay too much attention to the code until the engine is running consistently. Something is stopping the engine and few things will actually do that. Most problems cause some sort of bad running but as soon as a problem is detected the management system should switch to a get you home programme - that mostly gets you home as long as the system still receives signals from the crank and cam sensors, there is still a fuel supply and a viable ignition system to provide sparks.

Considering the age of the car, if you find inconsistent results while testing it could be wise to suspect the management ECU that could have sustained damage at any time during it's history from welding or boost battery charging or even jump starting.
In order to run an engine needs compression, the right amount of fuel, timing and an adequate spark. When an engine doesn't run one or more of those requirements is missing and only you can discover which...

hi,

its time for new fuel filter, new fuel injectors, spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap and rotor. the engine in the tempo is a good one and if you take care of it that car should last quite a while longer..
