Most VIN numbers are a lot longer than that.
It is possible that it is an engine serial number, but they are (or used to be) stamped into a flat spot on the block near the area where the bell housing bolts on.
I sure would NOT be thinking of purchasing a vehicle if that was the only number presented as proof of the identity of the vehicle.

Think your dealer is mistaken. If the engine is stock, then the serial number of car should enable dealer to get the engine info. Try another dealer just to make sure. I NEVER trust those *(&^^^&(*)))&*^%^&(
