not good thing timing belt break most of the time valves will get damaged you might be lucky my timing belt broke on my 1977 vega monza didnt damage valves but i had timing chain break on 98 lumina got valves damaged.
Are you replacing a broken timing belt? Or are you replacing a belt because it's due by miles? If the belt is broken, i strongly suggest inspecting for bent valves. Daewoo is notorious for bending all valves and breaking valve guides in the cylinder head when the timing belt breaks. The broken belt is also common.
You have a bad timing belt tensioner. Stop driving it because you are probably due for a new timing belt also if the tensioner is bad. If the timing belt breaks while you are driving it, serious damage may occur like a valve punching through a piston, bent valve, damaged cam, serious stuff can happen if the timing belt breaks.
If your timing belt breaks some of the valves will stay open and the pistons will come up and either break the valve or could put a hole in a piston. This is very costly. The rattle could be the belt tensioner
you should be ok.. i have never seen valve damage on one of these engines after belt breaking..just retime everything and install a new belt..make sure you check water pump and tensioner bearing for looseness/wear
yep valves will hit piston if timing belt brake.timing belt keep your valves and piston timed.when intake valves and exhaust valve open.piston is on down stroke.the timing belt keep pistons and valves from colliding.your timing belt change is due at 60000 miles.but in some cases belt need to be inspect at 30000 miles.to be on the safe side.
The ZX2 Zetec is a non-interference engine. This means the valves are not capable of touching the pistons at any time. If your belt breaks, there will not be any valve damage. There are reliefs cut into the top of the pistons that allow clearance for the valves if the belt breaks. Most engines are interference and will cause several hundred or even thousands of dollars of damage when a timing belt breaks. Most shop manuals list the ZX2 as interference but it is not. Many people seek out this how-to because a mechanic has informed them that they have valve damage and quoted a repair price over $1000.
