My 1996 LS 400 sometimes will not start. All the accessories including the lights are on, but when I turn the key to start it, there is no click, no sound, and seemingly no voltage is getting to the starter. It might sit for two or three days, and it then might start. There is no rhyme or reason. It either turns over, then starts, or there is no sound and it doesn't start. What's going on? The last time I had it towed to a garage, and when they tried it, it started right up. When I was ready to leave, it wouldn't start again.

Try shifting the gear selector into neutral , if an automatic transmission . If it is a standard shift, the clutch pedal switch may be malfunctioning

FLAT batterY?? Battery OK,now? New one? Old one OK?HUH?
Get security codes FIRST: radio and NAV.
Disconnect battery from car and wait for 30 seconds and turn on the headlight switch,DURING the battery disconnect.
Turn off the headlights and reconnect the battery.
the security system should "re-boot" and be happy.
then there is the radio issue, Get the code.....

Starter wont crank.

Next step is to get under the car and check the connections at the starter.. Do you have a 12 volt test light. If so probe the solenoid wire while someone hold the key in cranking position. If you have voltage there the starter died and needs to be replaced.  Always use jack stands while working under a jacked up car!!!

All dash warning lights came on while driving. oil light, brake light, coolant light, battery light. car continued to run. once home turned off and now wont start. warning lights still come on and car...

Hatterasnc,

You're alternator has gone bad and the vehicle was running on battery power. The "clicking" sound is your now dead battery that does not have enough power to turn over the starter. You might also want to check your power steering pump for leak. This is a know problem with early LS400s and will most likey be the cause of the alternator failure. I just dropped $1050.00 to fix the very same promblems you have.
