Make sure the block heater is working. But with high altitude and cold air this is somewhat normal for a diesel on cold start. If the glow plug indicator light flashes off and on quickly in the dash you may also have a burned out glow plug(s), this also causes a poor cold start.
If the engine is running, it is not the glow plugs as they are only used for cold starting and initial running and are switched off as soon as you move the vehicle or after 90 seconds, whichever comes first. You may have an injector issue or a turbo issue where the intake blades are clogged, the exhaust blades are clogged etc.
Take the vehicle to a professional and have them flow test the engine and check injector timing and fuel flow.
This will show up any air leaks etc in the injectors or any blockages in the intake and exhaust systems and any fuel issues.
valve seals are going. when car sits excess oil gets past the valve seals then when you staRT up it burns the oil off then runs fine and no more blue smoke. It is fine to run like that had the same in a dodge caravan 1996 6cyl. ran another 100 000 km. and still ran fine got rid of it for other reasons.
this is going to sound stupid, but check your tail lights and brake lights for a dead bulp (lamp). this could be the cause, and will be VERY cheap to fix!
Sounds like it is telling you that you need to get a glow plug replaced that is not functioning properly. Have a reputable shop let you know which one it is.
The problem was a break light relay, not a glow plug problem.
