2002 mustang gt timing and air/fuel

I have a 2002 mustang gt with 75mm tb and plenum, xe274h comp cams, headers, exhaust, etc.. trying to get timing and air/fuel dialed in right.. right now air/fuel is around 14.8 at idle and cruizing (jumps around due to cams from 14.4 to 15.4) and at wot it's 12.8.. timing at idle jumps around from 12 to 20deg adv, rev to 3000 rpms and is 45deg adv, cruizing it's at 45deg adv, and at wot 28deg at 5700rpms and 30deg at 6000rpms.. is this pretty close? do i need to richen or lean? adv or ****** timing?

    yes, i'm using the 'sniper special forces' tuner.. so i'm assuming that the wot settings are ok, just need to work on cruizing settings.. thinking 45deg adv may be too much? not sure.. the tuner will allow you to adjust air/fuel at wot by either multiplying fuel rate or adding or subtracting, where as idle and partial throttle only lets you multiply fuel rate (example 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.) which would change it dramatically.. if i pulled some timing out would that help richen up a little? not sure if you've used or heard of this type of tuner, but, it asks you a series of questions, like, inj size, maf size, headers long or short, x or h pipe, fuel pump size, cat back, etc.. once you answer all those questions it'll create a tune.. but, there is no settings for TB size or cams.. so you have to modify tune by changing air/fuel and timing settings to reach the proper tune, it basically give you a starter tune in my case with cams.. if i add any more timing than i already have down low, it makes it hard to start when engine is warmed up, have to give it gas to start. but, i could pull some timing out, and still be ok, if you think that might help richen a little? the timing and air/fuel at WOT showed the most HP on a dyno, adding or subtracting fuel or timing lowered HP, so i think it's right on.. just having trouble with everything in between (idle and cruizing).. engine, exhaust, and floorboard get pretty hot when cruizing also.. any input would be greatly appreciated.. thank you..

Sounds like you are very close. Perfect it 14.7. Are you using an aftermarket computer, or stock? Will need an aftermarket, as stock will not handle the added features you put on your car.

    Timing shouldn't have much to do with the air/fuel ratio. 45 degrees sounds like a bit much, but if you are not getting any spark knock, you should be close. If you are getting spark knock, turn it down alittle until you don't anymore.

Have you looked where the intake snorkel for your air comes into the engine is located? You might have had water sucked into your engine......

You might need some programming. Could be timing. Timing would cause a problem. I think your cam and crank need to work together, if one was changed, and other wasnt, could have some type of imbalance.

2002 Mustang GT must have a vaccum leak in the hose at the plenum and the manifold I am suspecting. I get a lean fuel air code reading after I just changed a 02 Sensor, and then codes 1130 and 1150 came...

The vaccum hose connects to the rear of the plenum and runs toward the passenger side firewall. There's a splice about 12" inches from the plenum so you won't have to replace the entire hose.

I have had to change the inertia switch for poor connections. Ford has updated some of the switches and harness. Quick test is to unplug it and jump the connector to eliminate it. There is a fuel pump relay that acts up as well. Fuse 14 is the pump fuse in the engine comp, the relay is by the coolant bottle, there is also a fuel pump driver module on GT 4.6L located under the trunk. Or maybe the pump. When you want to diagnose it I can help you through chat or phone.

How do I by pass the egr on a 90 2.3 ranger its the one with 8 spark plugs I up headed my header to a ****** header super comp after my stock one cracked theres no hook up for the egr on the manifold ...

The purpose of the EGR is to add a little inert waste exhaust gas back into the intake fuel/air intake charge to cool the combustion. High combustion temperatures cause environmentally challenging oxides of nitrogen to form plus they can burn out the exhaust valves and seats. One way to stop off the EGR is simply to put a metal blanking plate across the ports on the underside of the EGR valve. You can use the gasket as a template to trace the shape. Without EGR you may want to look at running a slightly richer (8 to 10%) mix to keep things running a bit cooler.

Fuel injected? If so check your injectors for fault and check the fuel pump for pressure. If the pressure drops off after it starts the engine will stall.

Cutting out

Its more than likely a vacuum leak, basically air is entering the charge system that hasn't been metered by the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

What you can do is take a can of WD-40 and lightly spray your intake plumbing from Filter to Engine and see if the idle RPM changes. Don't spray directly onto the surface close enough that the liquid collects, just mist it from about 1 to 1-1/2 feet away slowly to see if you can pinpoint the location where the air is entering the intake system and then tighten up the connections if its at a joint, or replace your parts if there is a hole, for instance in a rubber piece.

I don't know how modified your car is, but if you have other supporting modifications to your car, but if you maxed out your stock Throttle Body (Which is highly unlikely if thats the only thing you've done to your car), you probably need to upgrade your ECU and possibly your Camshaft.

Also, if I may make a suggestion to you about your modifications to your car. If you've done all of this intake work, with no other supporting mods. You aren't going to get very far as far as Horsepower, Throttle Response, or Torque. You only need to upgrade how easily the air can get into the engine if you start getting into some Head-work, some light-bottom end work, and a very good exhaust. The most you'll see out of these modifications is 10-15 peak horsepower, and you probably actually lost some throttle response. I recommend you put the car back to stock and start upgrading the engine from the other end starting with the exhaust. A set of headers, a free-flow true-dual exhaust and a mild camshaft will do absolute wonders for Horsepower, Throttle Response, and Torque-band, not to mention if you do all these things, at that point you could start adding some intake upgrades.

I hope I didn't offend ya by this post, I'm just truly trying to help ya man from a hardcore gear head. Hehe
