Bmw defroster blows hot air/vents only blw cold air

My 1997 bmw 528i will not blow hot air thru the vents, the defroster works fine and blows good hot air,, the vents do blow air at with no restrictions at the same time the defroster is blowing hot air. Is this function a mechanical problem, (doors in heater box) or could it be an electrical problem, ( fuses?)...are these function operated by cables as in other cars?..or is it operated by electronics?

These selections are run by Engine vacuum. sounds lie a diaphragm is NG to control the lower door

    thank you for the information, i will see if i can find a vacum problem, alsi i am curious as to if the lower door is not opening and closeing, why does it still blow cold air thru the vents,,( i mean actually blowing),,,not just cold air passing thru?....thanks again.

SOURCE: Heater only blows cold air

Check both heater hoses under hood to see if they get hot, if they do the heater is fine. need to check to see if the selection doors inside the unit are opening and closing.

check you antifreeze level and make sure its full

SOURCE: Heat wont blow through heater or defroster vents

common problem, check under dash by the gas pedal if control arms are muving went selecting from ac to heat cuz this it is the control for the vents to go from ac to heat and to defrost.

SOURCE: Dash vents will not blow air. Defroster and floor vents blow fine.

Is it a new vehicle? I had a new vehicle that had the same problem. Answer was that the holes weren't punched out of the vent.

SOURCE: Jeep AC blows cold air at defrost and feet but not through vents

There is a flap that directs the air. the flap is controlled by a vacuum actuator. This is located inside the venting. The actuator is connected to little vacuum hoses that attach to the temperature control switch. Either the flap is stuck, or the actuator has gone bad.

My heater does not blow in floor in a dodgeram 1500
the heater vacuum motor and lines needs to be checked.Also get the blend door checked.

Left Vents blow warm/hot air when calling for cold air
Usually a sign of a faulty blend door under the dash.
The blend doors direct air thru the ac and heater core along with the upper and lower vents.

AC issues
The problem is either an actuator or the door associated with it. Sometimes the gear strips, especially when the system goes thru a recalibrate after power has been removed and reapplied. Below is a diagram of the locations of the actuators.

A/C will only blow through defrost vents
Common question on this site. On late model cars, the vents are controlled by blend door motors. Small electric motors open and close doors to direct air flow.
Chances are you have a blend door that is stuck or a failed motor.
The default position is the defrost to make sure the windshield is always clear.
Someone will need to look behind the dash to see if all of the doors will move on demand.

Sounds like defrost door on heater box is not work You need to get under dash and check controls on the box. Good luck

Air blows out thru the vents but just no hot air, aslo i have to hit the dash for the air to come out thru the dash vents at times.
sounds like bad acuator motor, this is what moves the door in heater box to set hot or cold air, and other motors to set air to blow thru defrost, vent or floor. good luck.
