Replace the hall effect pick-up assembly inside the distributor. Remove the cap and rotor, it's the black plastic thing with wires coming out the side, remember which way it's in there.

Do me a favor and cycle the key to on, then off, then on, then off, then back to on,& leave it in the on position.(not start) Now watch & record any flashes of the check engine light. You will get a number of flashes, then a pause, then more flashes. for example: 3 flashes, pause, then 3 more, would be code 33. It will always be a 2 digit number. 2 flashes, pause then 5 flashes, is code 25. When you get 5 flashes, pause then 5 more, that's code 55 which means end of message. Get back to us with any codes that flash.

3 doesn't register, must have missed a flash or something. 55 is end of message.
Are you getting power to + side of coil when key on, as well as cranking it over? The ASD ( automatic shut down ) relay should be the one closest to front of car on drivers fender area under hood. Have you tested for power at coil, and checked for spark at plugs for sure? Also, lift distributor cap off and crank it over to make sure distributor shaft is turning as well. Let me know.

I have a 1991 Plymouth Acclaim - 4 cylinder. It will start and run for a while but if I make about 2 runs and come back out to start it, it just turns but will not catch. If I let it sit for about 4-5...

It sounds like your ignition coil is over heating. Was the coil replaced? Your mechanic should have checked voltage/resistance and replaced if needed since it is not too expensive and is a major part of tune-up and ignition system. You can change yourself in a few minutes and save some cash. I had the same problem and had to wait for coil to cool before it would start again. Hope this helps.

Cranks but wont start

you need to check for spark at the plugs while cranking.then check for fuel entering the intake at the injectors.you don`t say if its a 4 or 6 cylinder.if its a 4 cylinder you can look into the throttle body while someone cranks the motor and you should see fuel squirting into the intake.if you have no spark then check to make sure the cap and rotor is in good condition and the rotor is turning(if not then the timing belt maybe broken and needs replacing.also check the plugs as if they are worn so bad you won`t get any spark.a common problem on these is the coil pickup in the distributor going bad.there is a 2 wire connector that comes out of the distributor with a plug,if you follow this wire back into the distributor you will see the pickup.also check and see if you can hear the fuel pump running while cranking, you may have a bad fuel pump.you may have to remove the gas cap and listen at the filler neck or listen under the car were the gas tank is.if the fuel pump is not running then you can hit the fuel tank in the middle while someone cranks the motor and it might start.if so then the fuel pump is no good another common problem.there is a fuel pump relay under the hood on the drivers side that sometimes goes bad or there is bad connections.most of this checking is good for the 6 cylinder as well except you can see the fuel squirting into the intake.it could also be a bad computer that will have to be checked out at a shop.

Won't start, fuel pump runs at key on, spark at coil wire into distributor is yellow, little or no spark at plug wire ends

Sounds like bad distributor cap or rotor. If ones bad, might as well change both. Take off the cap and if there is a black color on the ends of the prongs, or on the end of the rotor, time to replace. Is it getting fuel into motor?
