SOURCE: I have a volvo 940

Sounds as if you have set the immobiliser, does your car have the volvo guard alarm system fitted, (is the red light on the window frame?) I found that when reconnecting the battery if you just tap the connector on the terminal 4-5 times before connecting it it would reset the immobiliser and the car will start

SOURCE: 1995 Volvo 850 112000miles running perfectly then

This sounds like a gearbox issue. Take it to a garage with diagnostic equipment and get the fault codes read.

Testimonial: "ok have been to independent volvo garage who read diagnostic code and replaced the pnp switch for £195 IT TOOK ONE HOUR only for them to fix "

SOURCE: FAn keeps running when car

There will be a sensor switch that switches the fan on and off, either on the radiator or close by maybe on the thermostat housing. you should find it by following the wires from the fan. Disconnecting the plug will stop the fan running, but your engine will get hot so watch your temp (you could connect a switch between the two connections on the disconnected plug as a temporary measure but replacing the switch should sort it out. If by chance the fan keeps running when the wire is disconnected from the switch its a short in the wiring. Oh, the fan will run on for a while after the engine is switched off but it should stop after about minute (once it has cooled it down) Check coolant level.

SOURCE: 2001 Volvo S80 cooling fan

This is normal. The fan will run even after the car is shut off until the engine gets below operating temperature. Most vehicles will do the same thing. Although I think thirty minutes is an excessive amount of time. Most could run up to fifteen to twenty minutes. If the car is retaining heat somehow this would cause it to run longer. Happy motoring!!!

SOURCE: Why does my fan keep running in my 2003 Volvo S 60 after the car is off?

It can be faulty fan relay. The relay is not turning the system off.Or its wire short issue.Even with ignition off ,the fan relay is getting power so its not letting the fan to turn off.Bypass the fan control relay and see if still the fan works with ignition off or not.

2004 XC90 Volvo, fan will not turn off, just installed new battery

you mean the engine fan or the interior heater fan ? if the engine fan it must just be a coincedence or the fan was running on before, and you might not have noticed, and if you replaced the battery because it kept going flat the fan running on to long could be the reason ,the engine temp sender may be the fault as fan is designed to run on after engine turned off to cool down components,so i'd get the OBD codes read this will pinpoint the sensor/switch that is at fault, save you time and money,as a temp fix see if you can disconnect the wire to the fan when engine has cooled as the new battery will soon be toast , plug back in when starting engine again being carefull in case the fan cuts in straight away which would also point to temp sender switch, keep me posted if you wish

What you need to do is to disconnect the positive side of the battery. This will kill the power supply to the electronic fans until AAA can get to you.

Cooling fan running after engine shuts off even with engine temperature at normal it continued to run for over an hour after driving

Someone hard wired it directly to a constant power source. I assume there was a problem with the fan at one point for someone to do this. If you disconnect the power wire to the fan and jump it to one of the fuses that only has power when the vehicle is running you will solve your problem. I would think your battery would be dying running for over an hour after the car is off.

My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo radiator fan started running continuously. The only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery or remove the fuse. Any ideas what might cause this problem? Tom

There's a thermostatic switch that kicks the fan on and off. It is apparently shorted, causing the fan to run continuously. Check with your local auto parts store -- you be able to replace the switch without having to replace the entire fan assembly. In the meantime, pulling the fuse is a lot better than disconnecting the battery. You won't lose computer memory, clock, stereo memory, etc.
