Re: Engine light came on after car wouldn't start in the...
It sounds like a fault in the display board inside your dash. Is the car running normally now? If so, wait till weather warms up and see if the 8 turns back to normal.

When the Engine Computer detects a problem, it sets a diagnostic fault code and turns the Check Engine light on to tell you. The place to start is by reading that code.
Cycle the ignition switch three times within five seconds from "off" to "run" without cranking the engine, leave it in "run", then watch the code numbers show up in the odometer display.
There's over a thousand potential fault codes but only those that could adversely affect emissions must turn the Check Engine light on. When the light is off the next time you start the engine, that means it's an intermittent problem and it has the second lowest level of severity. You still do not want to ignore it though because sometimes minor problems can become serious.
wow no year stated.... ouch.
take a breath
is this problem with a cold engine or hot, or both.
the N to D lurch is normal cold. (ever drive other cars?)
is the hot rpm at about 800?
is engine power ok>
does engine stall>?
cold rpm , not klondike is around 1500 max, and well lurch, cold when
going from N to any gear or Reverse.
the display wrong is , a failing PRNDL switch.
but the ECU reports this,
why not connect a scan tool and scan it.
id bet it got DTCs stored. causing the CEL to glow full time.
is it>?
PRNDL Display
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the selected gear position as determined by the powertrain control module (PCM). The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the gear position. The PRNDL display blanks if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the transmission range switch circuit.
• The IPC receives a class 2 message indicating the park position and the column park switch indicates a position other than park, open input.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.
Could be the transmission range sensor . Testing would need to be done , hooking up a scan tool ! Doing electrical testing etc...
George, 1) Yes It is normal for corona Engines to have that high rev when the engine is still cold. It automatically adjusts to the Normal Rev/min when the engine gets warm so don't worry about that. 2) The Buttons are use when you are running on road. PWR means Power meaning that you lock the car in gear Five while sprinting. MNL stands for manual transmission. 3) Econ tries to show you that you are using a higher gear like say 5, therefore your fuel consumption is now being economized and thus low consumption. Actually, its always good if you drive your car with that light on coz it saves on your fuel. It get on automatically.
Don't forget to vote my solution if it was of help to you.
HI IS THE HEATER INSIDE THE CAR WORKING AS GOOD AS IT NORMALY DOES.
IF THE HEATER IS NOT AS GOOD AS IT WAS OR IS COLD YOU MAY HAVE A START OF A HEAD GASKET GOING AS YOU WILL HAVE AN AIR LOCK IN THE WATER SYSTEM THATS WHY YOUR CAR IS RUNNING HOTTER I HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL TO YOU CHEERS STEVE
