Not necessarily. Check that the clutch slave cylinder is not being held in the disengaged position by a blocked clutch master cylinder. Check this by opening the bleed nipple and if the clutch arm moves to engage the clutch then replace the clutch master cylinder as the compensating port is blocked.
SOURCE: Clutch problem
check the fluid level first, if its empty this will happen, if so full it and bleed the clutch, if not it could be the slave cylinder and failing both, it could be the clutch itself, easiest way to check is to see on the gearbox if the clutch is engaging when you press the pedal down.
just ask if you need more help

needs a new clutch ,pressure plate dragging caused by worn springs
SOURCE: manual transmission shifter will not engage
Sounds to me that the shifter broke, i believe the shifter has a ball end that slips into a pocket in trans. that moves for gear selection and that ball brook off end of shifter. if its got a linkage set up most likely samething either shifting arms came off or shifter broke where linkage rods connect.

Hi there
Your rattling noise in engine bay ,dose it do it only when you start up, and if so dose the rattle go when the oil light on dash goes out, If yes then its either Low in oil/your parking on a slope/engine bearings worn/oil filter change and change oil to 30/50 oil.
you should only downshift to 1st whan stopped but you can change up and down the g/box without a clutch with correct Revs

Yes you most likely have a bad throw out bearing. If you replace the bearing you would do yourself a favor and replace the clutch and pressure plate while you are there.
