Hi there. I have a similar problem with my Audi A4 B7 2005 Estste.
First of all I have had a message on the clocks trhat my rear fog light is not working, then another day it shown tahat my left rear for and normal light is not working. I have removed the side lights as I couldn't get the tail fog light unit out of the body and left it there, disconnected plugs going to the lights and found raseted connectors pins what causes short and not woprking correctly, only used WD40 sprayed it and worked for a while, now I need to go back again and clen pins properly as I can see that this is the main issue as everything else is working and loosing connection from time to time.
Also found one bulb nearly gone and has been corroded as you have mentioned that woter getting to the light cause corrosion and then loose connection.

could be a relay or maybe even a cable break, hope it is the former, sound like a job for auto electrician.

I can't solve this problem, but have had the entire left tail light unit on a 2005 A6 replaced under warranty 5 times in 3 years. Once it was out of warranty, the dealer kept replacing bulbs and charging me $30 each, but it never solved the problem, even for a day (clearly looking to duck their lifetime guarantee on work they did).
SOURCE: Good day, I have Audi A6 2001 Avant 2.4 121KW FWD
sounds like a bad ground on one of the main harnesses. find the points were they connect and clean very good.
