Car wouldn't shift from first to second. Shut the car off, then would crank but not start. After sitting for an hour it started and ran fine and shifted with no problem.
SOURCE: gear shift moves fine will not engage gear.
then the transmission has failed or has sticking engagement solenoid in trans pan, have the fluid and filter replaced and see if that corrects the problem
SOURCE: Doesn't shift into gear
I recently had this same issue in my 1997 escort. When my speedometer stopped working, my transaxle did not want to shift properly either. This of course caused the check engine light to come on. Without the speedometer working, the transaxle would ride out first gear for a bit until it seemed to "warm up", then it would shift ok. It would seem to slip here and there; especially after slowing to turn a corner. I used my scanner to find a code, and it gave me the code "P0500", which is the speed sensor. I replaced the speed sensor, but that did not cure my issue; I had to take it a few steps further.
My ultimate solution started by removing the instrument cluster from the dash and checking continuity between the speed sensor, and the speedometer. I had 100% continuity between the two, so I looked further. There is a small electric motor that runs the speedometer; it has 6 wires, 2 brown wires, a red wire, a white wire, a blue wire , and a orange wire. I checked the electric motor, and it was bad. I went to the salvage yard and pulled the electric motor and replaced it. After I replaced the electric motor, everything started working as it should.
I hope this information is useful to you as well. Your transaxle may not be bad; the speed sensor alone may fix your issue.

Im assuming that the lights and the window were working before shift issue. If so check the fuses first.
It may be a coincidence, In a quiet area you should here a soft click sound, around the shift lever area. If not, try unplugging the brake switch behind the brake pedal, There should be 2, 1 for the rear brake lights the other for the shifter lock-out. If you unplug it you should be able to shift. If unplugging it causes it to shift then you will need to replace the switch.
