Anti-lock brakes activate on dry pavement

Recently my 2001 Tahoe's anti-lock brake system activates when coming to a stop on dry pavement. The typical anti-lock sound is heard and the brake pedal pulsates. There are times when it feels like the vehicle is not going to stop and the stopping distance is definetly increased. Thanks for any advice you may provide. Brian

The ABS light does not come on when it does it. If I take out the ABS fuse the truck works normally and there is typical braking but the ABS light is on because of the fuse being removed. We live in Ontario and there was a recall in winter climates regarding the ABS sensors in the front wheels and GM replaces some components. I wonder if this is the same problem again with corroded wheel sensors due to salt etc. in winter driving conditions?

Thanks, I'll try that. I did call GM and they said they did it once and that was all that they would do.

Will do. I won't mention the fact that I have an Audi on order.

    Thanks for the sound advice.

First, is the ABS light on? Does it come on when it's doing it? Make sure the brake fluid is full, and the brakes are still servicable, ie, pads still have meat on them. If so, the abs control module or a speed sensor might be on the way out. This is a safety issue, and I would recommend getting the truck to a good mechanic to have it checked out.

I wouldnt be at all surprised if those sensors are corroded again. That would explain why the abs light isnt coming on. The computer is probably not getting a good return from the front sensors and kicks in the rear abs. Take it back to the dealer and say you want them replaced again under the recall.

Call the GM regional office and tell them your dealer refused to fix the problem. GM is having too many problems to have unsatisfied customers. I worked at a GM dealer for many years, and you'd be surprised how many people did that and just like magic, their cars were fixed.

Where is the abs relay located

The abs relay is internal to the EBCM if you are referring to the code c0265 sets in the module and causes the ABS and RED brake light.

My tahoe has the traction off light what doe that mean?

It means the traction control system has been disabled. It can be done manually by pressing the switch on the dash or by an onboard computer (meaning there is a problem). If you can't press the button to get the light off, then get it scanned. Traction control system works with the anti-lock braking system and the engine to help the driver control the vehicle in the event it should be slipping or skidding. It will activate the anti-lock brakes, help reduce steering pressure to better steer and can sometimes cut out engine cylinders to reduce the power going to the wheels to better control in the skid.

Truck not stoping and anti brake is working.

dosen't stop at all or just slow?, if the abs is working then you should feel the pulseing in the brake pedal just before tire lock-up, the tires will not lock-up with abs fully funtioning unless all four tires or two are in lock-up depending on the abs application, if abs fails it reverts it self to regular braking ability, hope this helps

Abs comes on at low speed on dry roads 2004 silverado 4x4 right frount only

One of the sensors has gone bad and needs to be replaced, the other thing to that would also do that is the ABS sensor is dirty or needs to be re gaped to the speed ring on the hub. There was a issue bulletin with your Tahoe on the ABS activating under 8 km/h. Good luck and hope this helps, if not clean out the sensor with brake parts cleaner and check the wire harness and ABS sensor bracket. Re gap the sensor to the speed ring hub. Here is the bulletin. Where is the abs brake controller?

An anti-lock braking system, or ABS (from the German, Antiblockiersystem) is a safety system which prevents the wheels on a motor vehicle from locking while braking.
A rotating road wheel allows the driver to maintain steering control under heavy braking by preventing a skid and allowing the wheel to continue interacting tractively with the road surface as directed by driver steering inputs. While ABS offers improved vehicle control in some circumstances, it can also present disadvantages including increased braking distance on slippery surfaces such as ice, packed snow, gravel, steel plates and bridges, or anything other than dry pavement. ABS has also been demonstrated to create a false sense of security in drivers, who may drive more aggressively as a result.[citation needed]
Since initial widespread use in production cars, anti-lock braking systems have evolved considerably. Recent versions not only prevent wheel lock under braking, but also electronically control the front-to-rear brake bias. This function, depending on its specific capabilities and implementation, is known as electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), traction control system (TCS or ASR), emergency brake assist (BA, EBA or HBA), or electronic stability control (ESP, ESC or DSC).

2001 chevy silverado anti lock brakes

You most likely have a wheel speed sensor dropping out this would make abs system think one wheel is locking up and therefore activate. this usually will happen rt before you stop at around 5mph or so.Also if you have bigger tires than factory and have not had abs programmed for this size it can aggravate it

Antilock brake system engages on low speed stops on dry pavement on my 2004 Silverado.

The most likely cause is rust buildup under wheel speed sensors causing them to dislodge(lift up) from front hubs and read incorrectly. If recall has been performed to fix this problem...You may have to replace the appropriate hub in order to stop the ABS activation at low speeds. Let me know if i can help more.
